Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro unveiled in Chicago

The Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro has been unveiled on the first press day of the 2016 Chicago auto show.

Based on the Tacoma 4x4 double cab with the short tray bed option, the Tacoma TRD Pro is the third off-road-primed model readied for sale in the US by TRD. It follows hot on the heels of the TRD Pro versions of the full-size Tundra SUV and 4Runner.

The Tacoma TRD Pro rides on blacked out 16-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Kevlar-reinforced Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain tyres. Suspension upgrades include front springs with 1-inch (2.5cm) lift, a progressive-rate off-road leaf spring for the rear, and Fox 2.5 internal bypass shock absorbers.

In keeping with its off-road mission, the Tacoma TRD Pro comes standard with a part-time four-wheel drive system with transfer case, automatic limited-slip differential, a towing pack, engine oil and power steering cooler, 130 amp alternator, and trailer-sway control.

The Tacoma TRD Pro is available with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. Automatic-equipped cars feature an ATF cooler, crawl control mode, hill start assistance, and multi-terrain selector system.

Manual versions of the Tacoma TRD Pro are equipped with an active traction system that modulates power flow via the braking system.

Externally, the TRD Pro is distinguished from lesser Tacomas by its aluminium front bash plate, Rigid Industries fog lights, TRD Pro badging, and a grille with heritage-style Toyota lettering.

The interior has been upgraded with TRD Pro embossed leather seats, leather steering wheel, and TRD shift knob and floor mats.

Powered exclusively by a 3.5-litre V6 with 207kW of power and 359Nm of torque, the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro goes on sale in the States during the third quarter of 2016.
