Lexus LX470 recalled in Australia for curtain airbag fix
Lexus Australia has announced a recall on 1500 of its older Toyota LandCruiser-based LX470 SUVs this week over concerns that its side curtain airbags could deploy unexpectedly.
Introduced globally in 1998 and replaced by the current third-generation model in 2007, the LX470 existed then as the Lexus brand’s flagship SUV, just as the thrice-facelifted LX570 does today.
This week’s notice forms part of a wider global action that includes 320,000 Toyota and Lexus models recalled in the US. However, Toyota Australia has confirmed that only the LX470 is affected locally.
Recalled LX470 models in Australia include those built between July 2002 and June 2006.
Lexus reports that the “improper programming” in the airbag control module could see the side curtain airbags activated unexpectedly, in certain situations, shortly after the vehicle is started.
There have been no reports in Australia of accidents or injuries resulting from this fault.
Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by mail, and are advised to not drive their vehicle until after the SRS Warning Light has turned off, around four seconds after engine ignition.
“Replacement parts are currently being prepared and Lexus will notify owners when these become available to make an appointment at their preferred Lexus Dealer,” Lexus says.
