Nissan resolves to shed weight from 2016

Nissan has declared its cars must “shed the pounds” and that the intensive weight-loss regime will come from the use of materials normally used for space travel.

The Japanese company’s UK supply chain is collaborating with other auto manufacturers and research bodies to deliver a prototype material structure, as part of a new “Lightweighting" program.

The material will be used in the floor of Nissan’s next-generation vehicles, while more recent efforts have already led to a 90kg weight loss for the X-trail and 40kg for the new Qashqai.

“The next 12 months promise to bring not resolutions, but revolutions,” David Moss, Vice President, Vehicle Design & Development, NTCE (Nissan Technical Centre Europe) said.

“We know the cars of the future will need to be lighter, stronger and more efficient, which is why we are launching our prototype programme in collaboration with research and industry bodies across the UK.

“This programme intends to produce a new manufacturing process that will revolutionise the industry.”

The company believes the program will lead to improved performance, fuel consumption and counteract the weight of the increasing amount of technology being built into vehicles.
