February 2, 2016: Spy photographers have caught the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class coupe undergoing testing in Europe this week.
If you love the look of the S-Class and C-Class coupes, but found them either too big (and expensive) or too small, then the new E-Class coupe could just be the vehicle you’re looking for – because the new mid-size coupe looks as if it will feature all the design cues of its siblings.
Despite the camouflage we can see that the new E-Class coupe will wear the now-familiar Mercedes-Benz headlight styling. Unlike the new sedan and wagon models, the new coupe features frameless door glass and flagpole-style wing mirrors.
At the rear, there’s a thin set of horizontal LED tail-lights stretching into the boot lid, which also features in an integrated spoiler.
The interior of the new E-Class Coupe has also been spied in earlier prototypes, revealing – again – a now very familiar layout.
The interior of the coupe is largely shared with the sedan, although this prototype features a gorgeous new circular vent design. This coupe also features analogue dials, but we expect high-end versions to feature a fully digital instrument cluster.
Expect the offerings under the bonnet to broadly mirror those available in the latest-generation sedan, which was unveiled at the Detroit auto show earlier in January.
Petrol options on the new E-Class sedan include the 135kW/300Nm E200 four-cylinder and the 245kW/480Nm six-cylinder E400. For turbo-diesel fans, engine choices emcompass the 143kW/400Nm E220d and 190kW/620Nm E350d.
Turbocharged V8 power will come on stream later when the AMG models are revealed. The sedan range will also include a plug-in hybrid variant, known as the E350e, with total of 205kW of power and 600Nm of torque on hand.
As with the choices under the hood, in-cabin technology will largely mirror what’s available in the sedan range, although due to certification issues some of the E-Class’ latest autonomous driving technology may not be available in Australia from the get-go.
