2017 Mini Countryman spy photos

The second-generation Mini Countryman crossover has been spied in Europe's snow strewn northern reaches.

Unlike earlier prototypes, this latest pre-production Countryman does without any false body panels.

Stylistically, the new SUV doesn't stray far from the template laid out by the brand's original SUV with Mini styling cues stretched to fit a crossover body.

The new Countryman will utilise the long-wheelbase UKL platform, which currently does service underneath the latest-generation BMW X1. This means that the new Countryman should grow in both length and wheelbase.

The current Countryman rides on a 2595mm wheelbase, is just millimetres shy of 4.1m in overall length, is 1561mm tall, and 1789mm wide.

As a comparison, the new-generation X1 sits on a 2670mm wheelbase, measures 4439mm from front to rear, is 1598mm tall, and has a width of 1821mm.

Under the bonnet, the new Countryman will likely use the same set of the turbocharged three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines employed by both the latest Mini hatch range and the new X1.

The petrol X1 is bookended by a 100kW/220Nm 1.5-litre three-cylinder and a 170kW/350Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder. The diesel X1 range starts with a 85kW/270Nm 1.5-litre three-cylinder and is a capped off by a 170kW/450Nm 2.0-litre four-pot.

The new Mini Countryman is expected to debut at the 2016 Paris motor show, which takes place in October.
