Opel Insignia/2018 Holden Commodore winter testing spy photos

The next-generation Opel Insignia, which is likely to show up in Australia as the next Holden Commodore, has been spotted during cold weather testing near the Arctic Circle.

The prototype seen here is wearing the same amount of camouflage and disguise as the vehicle that was spotted back in August 2015. That said, its appearance on public roads has allowed our spy photography team to capture the vehicle new Insignia from more angles and with greater clarity than before.

The new Insignia looks set to adopt a swoopier shape than the current vehicle, and is said to be directly influenced by the 2013 Opel Monza concept.

Although we can see the Insignia's overall silhouette, it's difficult to make out too many of the car's styling details as this prototype, and the one before it, has been fitted with a layer of false panels below the shoulder line.

The new Insignia is widely tipped to replace the Commodore in Holden's lineup after local manufacturing finishes. Despite the fact that the new car will be fully imported and is built upon a front- and all-wheel drive platform, it seems likely that it will inherit the Commodore name.

Compared to the current Insignia, the new model will grow significantly, with overall length tipped to be just shy of five metres, putting it in the same ball park as the 4964mm long VF Holden Commodore. The new Insignia will be offered as a both a coupe-like sedan (seen here) and a wagon.

Thanks to the use of high-strength steel and other lightweight metals, the new Insignia should tip the scales at around 100 kilograms lighter than today's model.

Given the mechanical layout it employs, not to mention the world's ever tightening regulations on emissions and fuel consumption, the new Insignia/Commodore will not be offered with a V8 engine.

Instead, the top-spec model is tipped to feature a turbocharged V6 with around 300kW matched to an all-wheel drive system. More pedestrians versions will be powered by turbocharged four-cylinder petrol and diesel motors.

In terms of technology, the Insignia will feature everything that Opel can muster up, including LED matrix headlights, driver assistance technologies, and 4G internet connectivity with Wi-Fi hotspot functionality.
