2017 Volvo S90 R-Design spied without disguise

As with other R-Design variants in the Volvo line, this trim level will enter as the S90’s answer to the M Sport and S-line styling packages offered in the BMW and Audi ranges.

In the case of the big new XC90 R-Design revealed last year, that meant a unique grille pattern and a new front bumper and lower spoiler, along with silver and satin-silver accents, large sports wheels and twin exhaust tips at the rear.

The look continued into the cabin with sports seats, perforated leather steering wheel, and R-Design-specific versions of the shift knob, floor mats and tread plates.

“R-Design is created for people with a passion for things that add spice to life,” Volvo marketing chief Alain Visser said with the XC90 R-Design’s debut.

“It appeals to customers that love active driving and a personal, expressive design. Every single R-Design detail is designed to contribute to the individualistic and refined expression these customers desire.”

For this new S90 R-Design, there’s likewise a bigger and more sporting look to the front bumper and multi-spoke sports wheels (although these may not be the final options, particularly with those snow tyres). A view of the rear has yet to surface.

We can likely also expect to see the same satin-silver mirror caps and window trim that feature with the XC90 R-Design.

Although this R-Design variant will focus on sports styling, Volvo has confirmed that its newly in-house Polestar division will soon deliver genuine high-performance options in the range.

Volvo has yet to offer any word on the S90 R-Design’s launch timing, but a debut at March’s Geneva motor show could be on the cards.
