Buick Avista concept could preview new Holden Monaro

Buick Avista: new Holden Coupe previewed in Detroit?

This week’s Detroit auto show has brought GM fans their first look at the most exciting new Buick in decades - but it could also be a preview of what’s to come for Holden fans in Australia.

It was this time last year when GM’s chief of international operations, Stefan Jacoby, confirmed that Holden has a V8-powered sports coupe in its future. (Read more about that here.)

Now, a year later, Holden’s overseas stablemate Buick has unveiled the Avista concept, a two-door rear-wheel-drive coupe that builds on the styling of the big Holden-designed Avenir concept and the recently revealed 2016 LaCrosse sedan.

“The Avista embodies the dynamic soul of Buick,” said Buick global sales and marketing vice president Duncan Aldred. “It is a modern expression of the brand’s heritage of sophisticated performance, communicated with beautiful elegance.”

Unlike the Avenir, however, Holden was not involved with the Avista's design or development.

Speaking with CarAdvice today, Holden communications manager Kate Lonsdale confirmed that "GMA Design had no role to play in the development of this car".

The Avista packs a two-plus-two seating arrangement inside and, under the bonnet, a twin-turbo 298kW V6.

That six-cylinder engine doesn’t rule this concept out as Australia’s new V8 coupe, however, with any one of GM’s powerful hero engines a likely starter to join the six down the road (the CTS-V’s 477kW/800Nm unit, for example).

In concept form, the Avista rides on a 2811mm wheelbase, which suggests that - as anticipated - its platform is shared with the new Chevrolet Camaro, boasting an identical footprint.

The Avista is therefore 91mm than the new Mustang between the axles, while the big (and now rather ancient) Dodge Challenger rolls on a much longer 2950mm wheelbase.

Watch for more on the Avista’s leap to production to surface in the months ahead, and stay tuned to CarAdvice for word on its Australian potential.

For now, Holden's Kate Lonsdale has confirmed the carmaker has "nothing to add from a Holden perspective".
