2016 Chevrolet Cruze hatchback revealed

The second-generation 2016 Chevrolet Cruze hatchback has been revealed today, a week before its in-the-flesh unveiling at the 2016 Detroit auto show.

The new hatch shares most of its components with the next-generation Cruze sedan, including its 2700mm wheelbase. The hatch does feature a unique roof and abbreviated rear-end design.

With the seats up, the boot is said to be able to swallow 524 litres worth of gear. Capacity grows to 1189 litres when the rear seatbacks are laid down.

In the US, the new Cruze hatchback will only be sold in higher trim levels. All America-bound hatches will be powered by a new 1.4-litre turbocharged engine, which develops 114kW of power and 240Nm of torque.

As with many new models hitting the market today, the new Cruze is lighter than the outgoing model, thanks to the use of high-strength steel and less portly engines. Weight loss is claimed to be around 91 kilograms compared to today's model.

In terms of technology, the next-generation Cruze is available with a MyLink entertainment and navigation system that supports both the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring standards.

High-end models are also fitted with lane keeping assistance, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, reverse parking assistance, heated and cooled seats, LED lighting, and a heated steering wheel.

The car pictured here is equipped with the RS styling pack, which includes sportier front and rear fascias, 18-inch alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, and more pronounced side sills.

Sales of the new Chevrolet Cruze hatchback begin in the USA from the third quarter of 2016. The Australian-designed first-generation Cruze hatchback was never built nor sold in the States.

Holden has yet to confirm whether it will sell the second-generation Cruze locally as a more value-focused companion to the recently unveiled Astra hatch, which will soon enter Australian showrooms with lion badges.

Speaking with CarAdvice today, Holden communications manager Kate Lonsdale said that the carmaker will review the Cruze hatch's potential, but could not hint at which way the brand might go.

It is likely, however, that with the new Astra hatch to be sold in Australia - alongside the new Cruze sedan - that Holden will steer clear of the range complexity that would result from adding this mechanically related new Cruze hatch.
