Faraday Future FFZERO1 concept unveiled at CES 2016, EV platform detailed

The Faraday Future FFZERO1 is the startup electric car maker's first concept vehicle, and has just been unveiled at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

From its styling through to its incredible power, performance and technology claims, the FFZERO1 is designed to catch the eye of potential buyers, investors and the general public.

Although the FFZERO1 isn't itself slated for production, the concept is said to sit atop the company's Variable Platform Architecture (VPA) that will underpin its yet-to-be-revealed first generation of electric vehicles, which will reportedly be more practical and affordable than this concept.

The FFZERO1 has a "UFO line" around the centre of car, and this will also be featured on the company's upcoming vehicles. The FFZERO1 also incorporates aero tunnels that run the length of the vehicle, "dramatically reducing drag and improving battery cooling".

With a four-motor arrangement, the FFZERO1 is said to have over 745kW (1000hp) at its disposal. The carbonfibre-intensive car is claimed to have a 0-60mph (0-97km/h) time of under three seconds and a top speed in excess of 322km/h (200mph).

The VPA setup consists of a skateboard-style chassis that has a string of battery packs in its core. Various wheelbase lengths can be achieved by adjusting the chassis rails, and adding or deleting battery packs as needed.

Faraday Future claims that VPA can also accommodate anywhere from one to three electric motors, as well as front-, rear- or all-wheel drive configurations.

The FFZERO1 seats just one: the driver's seat is inspired by NASA research, and features a back that's reclined at 45 degrees.

The seat is said to "promote circulation", while holding the driver in a "comfortable, weightless body position". An accompanying helmet provides neck support, as well as oxygen and water.

There's also a smartphone dock integrated into the car's steering column. Presumably through an app, the driver is then able to control many of the car's features, whether they're sitting inside or residing outside the car.

According to Faraday Future, the FFZERO1 "could be fully autonomous", but the company has yet to offer any details as to how this will be achieved and what technologies it plans to use.

The company, which is headquartered in California and claims to have around 500 employees, plans to build a US$1 billion EV factory in North Las Vegas.
