Update: The car has been officially unveiled: Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

First details and pictures of Mercedes-Benz’s SLS AMG have begun to appear on the net today, a week ahead of the car’s official launch at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

SLS 63 AMG

The 300SL-inspired “Gullwing” model features a  front/mid-mounted version of the brand’s 6.3-litre V8 (as fitted to the majority of AMG’s offerings) developing 420kW and 650Nm.

Mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission the SLS AMG will drive the rear wheels and should see 0-100 km/h times near enough to 3.7 seconds.

The 1587kg vehicle has a top speed of 317km/h and will utilise (optional) carbon ceramic discs for quicker stopping power.

Color choices will include Alubeam Silver, Syvanite Grey, Alanite Grey and Red, complimenting the leather and alcantara interior and ten-spoke forged wheels.

Production will begin in late 2010 with sales starting the following year, and early pricing guide suggests €177,310 (AUD$298,000) in Germany though truth be told it’s really more of a case of wait and see.

That looks brilliant! Buy I’d rather an original. At least Mercedes finally have something special. I was getting a bit tired of them just putting the 6.2 V8 in everything.

I thought the original Gullwing was an amazing car and while I’m not inspired by many Mercs knowing the poor reliability they are reknowned for, I really like this one. If I win lotto I know where some of the money is going.

This looks sensational! I can only imagine how much more beatiful it will look in the metal. The rear looks particularly eniticing. Interesting to see the maclaren have released details of their supercar on the same day.

just as stunning as i pictured it.

    *like*

  12. The original 300sl gullwing was a classic and this has a very modern take on a classic design. It is very tempting.

Can’t say I’m a fan. To me it’s a mix of the very pretty original, the bit dull Porsche GT & a bit of the hideous SC430 at the rear & somehow doesn’t gel.

  15. refreshing design, unique, and obviously a technological achievement….but these exterior photos do not live up to my expectations. the front lights are awkward and the grill/intakes seem overdone. Love the interior however
