2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class revealed in leaked images

The all-new 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class has surfaced again, this time in a set of glossy marketing shots published in the German press.

These new images follow a series of teaser shots that saw the new 2016 E-Class spied behind the company’s stylists, along with an official look at the big new Merc’s interior a week earlier.

As expected, the new E-Class joins the smaller C-Class and larger S-Class in a new homogenised styling language for Stuttgart, with only the finest of design details setting the three apart.

The similarities include a larger and more softly curved grille flanked by a new bean-like headlight look, reaching back to a cabin with a tall glasshouse and subtle character lines.

At the back end, the E-Class boasts a long rear deck with a lightly upturned lip, flowing down to tall LED tail lamps that again mirror the styling that began with its S- and C-Class siblings.

All three models have played a key role in introducing new technologies to the Mercedes-Benz family, however, and the E-Class, with a unique display panel stretching across the dash in top-spec models, is no exception.

These images also offer a first clear look at the dash arrangement of lower-end models, with a wide centre display matched to a more conventional instrument cluster made up of two mechanical dials and a smaller information display.

This latest leak, published by German website Auto-Press, also claims to confirm the new E-Class sedan’s length at 4923mm on a 2939mm wheelbase - an increase of 44mm and 65mm over the current model.

Depending on the market, powertrains in the new E-Class range are expected to include a range of petrol and diesel engines, along with a plug-in hybrid variant.

Those will include 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol and diesel engines - the latter reportedly producing 143kW and returning fuel consumption figures of around 3.9L/100km - along with a 205kW 2.0-litre petrol-electric plug-in hybrid model.

Top-shelf AMG models will headline the range, and while details are still to come, we can likely expect power to come from Mercedes-AMG’s new twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8.

Outputs will reportedly reach beyond 447kW in top E63 S form - likely the only variant of the E63 that we’ll see in Australia.

Watch for the new E-Class to make its official debut at next week’s Detroit auto show.
