Hyundai Genesis most awarded US car for 2009

By Matt Brogan |

Hyundai’s all-new flagship model, the Genesis sedan, has blitzed its opposition in the US to become the most decorated new car launched this year.

With more than 20 top honours, including recognition from J.D. Power, Motor Trend, AutoPacific and a host of leading consumer publications, the Genesis has won universal acclaim, also being crowned 2009 North American Car of the Year – the first time a Korean brand has achieved the honour.

Built on Hyundai’s completely new rear-wheel drive platform the Genesis is available with two (petrol) powertrain options: a 3.8-litre V6 and 4.6-litre V8.

The new Genesis sedan also offers a five-star safety rating.

“Genesis was conceived and built to give the world’s best luxury sedans a run for their money,” said Kevin McCann, Hyundai Motor Company Australia’s Sales and Marketing Director. “The fact that it has achieved so much recognition from experts proves not only that Genesis is a great car, it also confirms that Hyundai has become a global leader in product design as well as quality and value.

“Clearly, the public is also ready to embrace the idea of Hyundai producing an attractive luxurious product. Hyundai’s achievements in North America are mirrored in the Australian market with the i30 range, iLoad and iMax receiving numerous accolades. With a number of new products such as the 2010 Santa Fe, i20 and ix35 on the way, Hyundai is continuing to offer buyers award-winning quality cars.”

Hyundai are doing a fantastic job at actually listening to what people want.

  • Carfanatic

I’d buy one, I’ve seen footage of one of these on a race track, quite impressive

  • Jon Leong

there is no point of know x amount of award has been awarded to the genesis if they don’t sell it here… Bring it over here…

  • Carfanatic

They may well bring it here, after all they had one at the Melbourne motor show, obviously in left hand drive but why show it if you really don’t intend to sell it in that market place?

  • alex

change the grill and id buy one.

    • s4driver

the american spec grille is different to this, and does look a bit better.

    • Tack

      Put “HONDA” badge.

Why is Hyundai’s new Genesis sedan winning so many awards? It was named North American Car of the Year in January, won the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study award, which measures what consumers like and dislike about their new vehicles during the first 90 days of ownership, achieved the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) “Top Safety Pick” for 2009, won the Aspirational Luxury Car category in automotive research and consulting firm AutoPacific’s Ideal Vehicle Awards (IVA) which ranks cars for how closely their vehicles come to matching owners’ expectations and criteria, and this after winning its class in AutoPacific’s 2009 Vehicle Satisfaction Awards (VSA). On Wheels Media, Inc., publisher of African Americans On Wheels, Asians On Wheels, and Latinos On Wheels, named the Hyundai Genesis Car of the Year, while it won the Cars.com New Car of the Year, MyRide/Autobytel Editors’ Choice Award, topped Luxury and Value on the Best New Car List by About.com, and was named a Consumer Guide Recommended Buy for 2009, a Consumers Digest Best Buy for 2009, a “Top 5 Luxury Car for 2009” by the U.S. National Automobile Dealers Association (NADAguides.com), took a “Best Bet” award from The Car Book, became Consumer Reports’ ‘Top-Rated ‘Upscale Sedan’, topped J.D. Power’s Vehicle Launch Index (VLI), was recognized as a best new model for 2009 by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, was assessed as having the highest residual value by the Automotive Lease Guide, and all while achieving the 2009 Car of the Year award by China’s Autoworld magazine. Here at home the Genesis sedan won the Automobile Journalist Association of Canada’s (AJAC) Best New Luxury Car under $50,000 and the 2009 Canadian Car of the Year. Also impressive, Hyundai’s V8 Tau engine in the top-line Genesis 4.6 reviewed here, received a 2009 Ward’s 10 Best Engines award.

    Whew!

    • http://skyline The Salesman

Bring it to Australian soil and the customer response will be. “Yeah, but its a Hyundai”
Clearly Hyundai – Kia make some of the best cars in the world. But Aussies will continue to pay more money for Toyotas and Mazda’s because of a badge. And in some bloggers opinion “better plastic?”

  • Carfanatic

I’m sure you can get after market grilles for them.

  • Howard

Drive the Genesis and then drive the Holden Calais(Pontiac G8) or Statesman – there is no comparison – the Genesis is far better in every respect. Plus it looks great

  • UK

Do you think people in Australia would pay over 50k for a Korean car?

    • Carfanatic

If the build quality and driving pleasure was there, yes!

    • RdS

what if it was built in Korea by ‘Australians’? what if it was built in Australia by Koreans? people have to learn that where a car is made is irrelevant if there is any sort of quality control – its all the same materials and robots putting them together…

    • New guy in town

      UK

You have seen too many episodes of Top Gear.
I wonder they broadcasting Top Gear in US. Are they?

    • D

UK is one of the right handle car country, right?

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Countries_driving_on_the_left_or_right.svg

left-hand traffic countries market are small. so, hyundai does not put high-end vehicles to these market.

so, Hyundai does not bring brilliant high-end vehicles to UK and Australia market. so, these counties customers still think “Hyundai = Cheap economy car”. I understand UK people still think Hyundai as underdog.

      • Tack

        That’s a big fat excuse isn’t it?

    • Devil’s Advocate

Why not UK, people in Australia are paying $155k for a Commodore… ;-)

  • mike

It’s nice to see a company out-toyota Toyota.
People scoffed at the Lexus LS400 20 years ago, look at them now.
If its $US32-40k in the US, they should be able to land it in Australia under $80k well under half the price of the larger LS460.
    Just do it Hyundai!

    • Tack

      Yeah,
But none of Germany and Japanese Auto company feel crisis or fear from this car.
LS400 gave huge impact for Big 3 German for sure 20 years ago.

  • Carfanatic

80K? Based on the current exchange rate we should get them for 55 on road.

    • Shak

Yeah but they will jack up the price because its luxo spec, and the tariffs have to be taken into account. If they can bring it here under 57 laarge then they will avoid the LCT.

  • Chucky

Keep in mind that this is not their flagship model. This is competition for the Lexus G300 and GS430. The Equus is their flagship model, which looks very nice and competes with the Lexus LS430.

    • D

It compete with Lexus GS ~ Lexus LS 460.(but undercut the price than these competitors)

  • Robin Graves

Wow, I’m really surprised at the lack of negative comments as yet on this car – or Hyundai. Bring it on I reckon – seems like a great car.

    • Carfanatic

That’s because most sensible people realise Hyundai are making a concerted effort to have one of the best brands in the world.

      • Robin Graves

Agreed, but there is a lot of un-sensible badge snobs on this site.

    • Tack

That’s because this car won’t be here in Australia.
Not many people haven’t done test drive or even never seen actual car !!!
They won’t make right hand drive Genesis soon anyway….

Is this negative enough for you?

      • D

Yup. No Right handle. Japanese (like you) in Japan can’t drive this car.

Anyway…Japanese like you are easy to spot. lol

        • Tack

Humm… You never been to Japan before haven’t you?
Yes, Japan is basically right hand drive world.
But at same time so many people drive left hand drive car as well.
          it isn’t problem at all.
Japanese accept good cars instantly, most people actually hate problems from conversion from LHD to RHD.

I could not understood your comments at all.
Most Japanese car manufactures make LHD cars for all over the world as Hyundai.
But why Hyundai does not make RHD Genesis?
Because they are not stupid, they knew this Genesis is not big seller.
Only small number people will buy this car at the moment.

Whatever, this car was received good reviews, it dosen’t matter, if it’s not coming in Australia/

    • co

Most Negative comments of Korean vehicles are made by Japanese.

Most of the nastiest posters here are Japanese pretending to be various different nationalities.

      for exmaple,
      “Tack says:” <- 100% Japanese.
This Japanese appear every single Korea relation article, and write hateful racist&negative comments as possible as he can. Bashing Korean vehicle very stupidity. His english grammar is also typical Japanese style english.

        Hi D,

What does BMW X5 Driver try to say is “I would die if people think I am a Hyundai driver !!!”

    • DGS

Good news BMW X5 Driver, Hyundai don’t make herses, so little chance of been seen dead in one. As for safety, Hyundais current modles are in the same safety league as other cars in their classes, not the death traps of 10 to 20 years ago.

I once said simular things about hyundais during the 90′s but now I own one. In future years you may well find yourself in a simular situation.

    • Tinman

Sounds like you have very low self esteem.

But I gave you a lift to the shops the other day in my car.
