Older Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee models recalled over airbag, seatbelt fault

Older examples of the Jeep Cherokee and larger Grand Cherokee have been recalled in Australia this week, due to concerns surrounding the vehicles’ airbag and seatbelt systems.

In both models, a fault with the airbag system occupant restraint control may unexpectedly cause the airbag to be deployed, while possibly also activating the seatbelt pre-tensioners.

Activation of either can, of course, pose an accident risk to occupants and other road users.

The recall affects a total of 2309 examples of the 2003 Cherokee and 2004 Grand Cherokee SUVs in Australia.

The local situation reflects a wider global recall on more than 700,000 Cherokee and Grand Cherokee models overseas for the same issue, which Fiat Chrysler has confirmed is not related to the Takata airbag scandal that has swept through the auto industry.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Australia will contact owners of affected vehicles to make arrangements for repair.
