Geely announces plan to cull traditional engines by 2020

The Blue Geely Initiative, as it's known, was announced at the Guangzhou auto show overnight, and Geely says it will be implemented from 2016 to 2020.

Chinese manufacturer Geely Automotive has announced that it plans to phase out conventional internal combustion engines by 2020, with the vision of a line-up purely consisting of hybrid, plug-in hybrid and pure electric vehicles.

The Chinese company claims the plan will see it it "meet and exceed Chinese government fuel directives to bring average fuel consumption to 5.0 litres per 100 kilometres by 2020". Further, the ambitious brand claims it will "move to sell plug-in hybrid vehicles at a similar price level to its traditional combustion engine range".

Geely claims it will work towards offering further advanced vehicles in the coming years, including hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles and metal fuel-cell models, too. Further to that, lightweight materials will be important for the company, and it claims it will "become a market leader" in that regard, as well as "intelligent and connected systems".

Marking the arrival of the Blue Geely Intitiative is the Emgrand EV, a fully electric version of the sedan which is the country's best-selling model - no small feat, given that 23.5 million vehicles were sold in China in 2014 (that's about 22 times more than Australia).

The Emgrand EV is said to be able to travel up to 330 kilometres, and at a 'public fast charger' it can be filled to the buzzing brim in just 48 minutes, or to 80 per cent in half an hour.

A plug-in hybrid version is due in the coming 12 months. That model will pair a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine with a bank of batteries to offer up 185kW of power.
