2016 Toyota Prius spied testing in Australia

CarAdvice has spied the 2016 Toyota Prius testing in Australia ahead of the car's global rollout later this year and local launch early next year.

The fourth-generation petrol-electric Toyota Prius hybrid was unveiled in Las Vegas in September and revealed in more detail a few weeks later in the lead up to the Frankfurt motor show.

The heavily camouflaged car seen here is understood to be undergoing local calibration testing ahead of its Australian introduction in the coming months.

The all-new Prius is built on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), which sees the car's length increase by 60mm to 4540mm, its width grow 15mm to 1760mm and its height come in at 1470mm. The new car's wheelbase is unchanged at 2700mm.

Most significantly, European testing has shown it to be 18 per cent more fuel efficient than its predecessor. Extrapolating that efficiency improvement to our market would translate to a super-frugal combined cycle fuel consumption rating of 3.2 litres per 100 kilometres.

A first for the new model is Toyota Safety Sense (TSS), which adds world-class safety features to protect occupants and other road users, including pre-collision braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning with steering assist, dynamic radar cruise control and automatic high beam lights.

While we didn't get a chance to peek at the interior, the Prius is set to go on sale with two interior colour options: cool grey, and black with white plastic highlights.

Do you like the look of the new Prius? Or has Toyota gone a bit too far with the styling?
