Mazda MX-5 Speedster and Spyder introduced at SEMA 2015
The Japanese car maker has unveiled two concepts, the Mazda MX-5 Speedster and Mazda MX-5 Spyder, at the 2015 SEMA show in Las Vegas.
Created for a pared back "unadulterated, wind-in-the-hair driving experience, evocative of the open-top sports cars of the 1950s", the MX-5 Speedster (above and below) features a far greater number of modifications than its Spyder sibling.
For one, the Speedster, finished in a one-off shade of blue, has a small deflector instead of the regular car's windscreen.
The Speedster rides on custom 16-inch Rays Extreme Gram Lights wheels with 225/50 Kumho Ecsta tyres, and an adjustable suspension setup that's 30mm lower than the production MX-5.
There's also a Racing Beat centre-mounted exhaust, carbonfibre doors, and carbonfibre shell seats by Mu-Len Delta that are trimmed in Alcantara.
All up, the Speedster has a weight of 943 kilograms, or 113kg less than the donor vehicle.
The Spyder (above) is painted a unique shade of silver and has a custom-made "bikini top" by the American Sunroof Corporation.
It rides on lightweight Yokohama Advan Racing RS II 17-inch alloy wheels clad in Yokohama Advan A048 225/45 tyres, and also features a carbonfibre aero kit, grille intake and tonneau cover.
On the inside, seats and other surfaces are covered in Soinneybeck Prima leather for a "sense of vintage motoring".
Both MX-5 concepts are powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder SkyActiv-G engine - and, of course, neither is slated for production.
