As the months in Europe march out of winter, the fifth-generation 2017 Land Rover Discovery has been spied once again – this time in cold-weather testing.
Peering through the car’s extensive camouflage, we can see that the new Discovery will retain its traditionally boxy profile and overall shape.
The corners look to have been smoothed off a little, however, while the tailgate seems to be raked ever-so-slightly, instead of being purely vertical as it is on the current vehicle.
The new Discovery will also feature a few of the styling cues used on the transverse-engine Discovery Sport, including that car’s sleeker, pulled back headlights.
Reports suggest that the new Discovery is based on the same platform as the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. That means that the new car will feature a riveted and bonded aluminium body, which should make the new car lighter, more agile, faster, and more economical than the current vehicle.
No doubt, Land Rover will try to ensure that the new Discovery maintains the nameplate’s reputation for off-road ability.
In addition to a selection of boosted petrol and diesel engines, the rumour mill indicates that the Discovery will be offered with a petrol-electric hybrid drivetrain at some point.
Expect the new Discovery to have a much more modern interior than the current model, with improved materials and an up-to-date design that incorporates Jaguar Land Rover’s latest touchscreen infotainment system.
