2016 Volvo V60 range simplified, $5K cut from diesel variant

The 2016 Volvo V60 range has been topped and tailed, with the local division dropping the entry-level and high-performance versions from its mid-sized wagon line-up.

Gone are the D4 and T5 Kinetic variants and the six-cylinder T6 R-Design and limited edition Polestar sports estates, leaving just three grades of the MY16 V60: the D4 and T5 Luxury variants and the sportier T5 R-Design.

Despite being better equipped, the new D4 Luxury is actually cheaper than the discontinued base spec D4 Kinetic. It costs $57,675 plus on-road costs, making it $315 cheaper than the old D4 Kinetic and significantly $5315 more affordable than D4 Luxury it replaces.

Above it sits the $59,990 T5 Luxury and $63,990 T5 R-Design, both of which are $1000 cheaper than before.

A mild tweak for the 2.0-litre four-cylinder D4 diesel engine boosts peak power from 133kW to 140kW, while peak torque remains at 400Nm. Acceleration from 0-100km/h takes 7.7 seconds, while combined cycle fuel consumption is rated at 4.5 litres per 100 kilometres.

The 2.0-litre four-cylinder T5 turbo petrol engine is unchanged, producing 180kW and 350Nm, sprinting from 0-100km/h in 6.4 seconds, and using 6.8L/100km combined. We had this variant in the CarAdvice garage recently for an extended loan - read those reviews here.

Both engines pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission that sends drive to the front wheels.

There are no changes in specification for the updated V60 range, with standard features including 18-inch alloy wheels, active bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, reverse-view camera and rear parking sensors, steering wheel gearshift paddles, City Safety autonomous braking, climate control, electric front seat adjustment, rear booster seats, leather upholstery, and a 7.0-inch screen with satellite navigation, voice control, and internet connectivity with in-car web apps.

Volvo has cut the price of some major options, including the Driver Support Pack (adds blind spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, driver alert system, adaptive cruise control with full auto brake, and park assist pilot), which is down from $5000 to $4000, and metallic paint, down from $1750 to $1325.

2016 Volvo V60 pricing (plus on-road costs):
D4 Luxury $57,675 (-$5315)
T5 Luxury $59,990 (-$1000)
T5 R-Design $63,990 (-$1000)
