Looks like everyone seems to forget that there is some opposition to Magna buying Opel–and that’s Volkswagen. VW recently stated that will not accept the possibility of one of its major parts suppliers becoming a major competitor, and has warned Magna that it will find another supplier if the Opel deal goes through. I also understand that Mercedes is also threatening to drop Magna as a contract builder for its G-Wagen for the same reasons. Personally, I question Magna’s involvement with GAZ, whose track record of investing and acquiring automakers is disastrous-witness the collapse of Britain’s LDV Vans-and it’s failure to keep its own operation running soundly. It’s probably best for GM to spin off Opel as an independent automaker and let it fend for itself.

Observer i dont think Fiat could get their bid in by the closing date, and thus Magna looks like the most likely candidate.
