Subaru WRX STI NR4 ready for Australian racers

Subaru’s special WRX STI NR4 race car, announced in July, is now available in Australia - and eight examples have been sold already.

Imported in base form by Subaru Australia and enhanced by longtime racing partner Possum Bourne Motorsport (PBMS), the NR4 is a competition-only offering.

The new special’s name comes from the FIA’s new NR4 regulations, which replace the previous N4 and R4 classes.

As such, the WRX STI NR4 racers are FIA-homologated and can be entered in WRC2, ERC2 regional and progressive national championships.

Power is provided by Subaru’s turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder ‘Boxer’ engine, in this application (and in the Japanese market) producing 227kW and 422Nm of torque. By comparison, Australian-delivered road-going models get a 221kW/407Nm 2.5-litre unit.

The PBMS-tuned WRX STI NR4 is available in three race-only tiers, with six option packs encompassing engine, brakes, driveline and suspension, along with specialised options for gravel and tarmac competition.

“The attention to detail on this car is just amazing and it’s a compliment to PBMS that they have only honed their skills further since they partnered us in producing 10 consecutive years of Australia Rally Championships,” Subaru Australia managing director Nick Senior said.

Two colours are available: white and, of course, WR Blue.

The optional PBMS packages are aimed at buyers across the spectrum of amateur to professional competition, and Subaru Australia has its own Tier 1 club-level example developed for display and promotional duties.

Subaru Australia Tier 1 car features:

FIA approved roll cage basic spec: CAD designed, CNC bent
OMP winged seats
OMP six-point harnesses
OMP steering wheel
PBMS seat runners
Interior paint (gunmetal grey)
PBMS fibreglass centre console panel for window switch
PBMS fibreglass door panel set - front and rear
PBMS fibreglass radio panel
PBMS fibreglass rear parcel tray
PBMS fibreglass foot tray (driver’s side)
Interior sound deadening removal
Airbag removal and window switch relocation

Subaru’s car will first go on display at Melbourne’s Subaru Interactive @ Docklands, before going onto fulfill other promotional commitments. It will then be sold.
