Photos and details of the BMW M2 sports coupe have been leaked ahead of its debut later today.

Overnight Jalopnik published scans supplied by reader eightythird from the latest edition of Auto Express, which details the latest addition to BMW’s M performance vehicles.

Based on the 2-Series coupe, the new M2 reportedly features the same 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six engine used in the M235i. For the M2, this engine has been tuned to deliver 270kW of power and 465Nm of torque. An extra 35Nm of torque is available on overboost.

Thanks to aluminium components, weight has been stripped down to 1495kg, or around 35 kilograms lighter than the M235i. Apparently, the M2 also features a selection of components from the M3 and M4 models, including front and rear axles, brakes, crankshaft and pistons.

Also taken the from the larger M3 and M4 are the two transmissions on offer: a six-speed manual and seven-speed dual-clutch. According to the British magazine, the six-speed M2 is good for a 0-100km/h time of 4.5 seconds, while the dual-clutch model can complete the standard in 4.3 seconds.

The BMW M2 rides on 19-inch alloy wheels and has an electronically controlled limited-slip differential.
