Volkswagen drops to 95RON petrol

August 24, 2009 by Matt Brogan

Volkswagen have revised the minimum fuel requirement for most of its new petrol engine range.

DB2008AU00878

The review of the entire petrol engine range, which took into account current Australian fuel quality standards and the operating range of Volkswagen’s petrol engine, resulted in the reduction of the minimum fuel RON requirement on almost all engines.

Volkswagen now recommends a minimum 95RON for all petrol engines with the exception of three current models: Passat R36, Passat CC V6 and Golf R32 models.

The change to Volkswagen’s recommendation for the use of 95RON fuel is for all model year 2010 vehicles.

The vehicles affected by this change are listed below:

Can only be better for the consumer. Now if they could only reduce the Grade for the Passat R36 then i might consider it.

    One serious question here:
Does this apply for my Octavia RS? Same engine etc as the Jetta TFSI and does this mean that the cars can run on 91RON in an emegency (like before they could run on 95RON in an emergency even though my can ran fine with it…)?

  3. 118TS! says:

Good news, but I think I’ll stick with the 98…

Shak, if the cost and type of fuel is a sticking point for you with an R36, you’re kidding yourself – I hear Barina’s run on 91…

  4. onepoppa says:

Good news for VW owners – except has anyone noticed how many Shell/Coles stations in Melbourne have phased out Unleaded 95?

  5. Reckless1 says:

With all the VW engines (except perhaps R36) delivering superior fuel economy, I don’t see this as a particular benefit.

As mentioned, many servos don’t keep it (but hey, you wouldn’t put Shell premium into a VW anyway – the GTI runs like a dog on it) and many servos have an E10 which is 95, so those who pay VW price for a very good car will run around likes chooks with their heads cut off for cheap fuel will use that.

I agree – don’t want to afford 98, buy a boring car – Barina or corolla or similar.

  6. JEKYL & HYDE says:

    reckless,

or maybe buy a car that can use 91,but works better on 95/98.maybe with a few more cylinders too,or a hairdryer.what happens to your warrenty if you use 91 and have a problem…

  7. DG says:

    Shak:

If you consider 98 is 4 cents more than 95, on an average 70 litre tank of fuel, it will cost you $2.80 more!

Surely on a $70,000 car this would not make a huge difference on the pocket……

  8. lpg says:

    Reckless1,
Which 98 RON fuel do you recommend for the GTI? I own a chipped GTI V and it runs perfectly fine on Shell V Power 98 Ron.

  9. Reckless1 says:

LPG, I use BP 98. Always used that in the karts as well, except when we had to use control fuel and it was Optimax, then the karts ran like dogs too.

The Sirion GTVi in the family won’t run on Shell properly, so SWMBO used Mobil. Then Mobil was thought to be issuing dodgy fuel a few weeks ago, so she filled up with BP, and noticed the car running far smoother. That’s from a total non-car-tuned person….

Check the GTI forums, there’s a broad following for BP. Sadly, many people will use Coles/Woollies because they can’t resist the lure of a paltry 4c discount, I see them every week queuing out onto the road and waiting 30 mins to get 4c off.

  10. Yanzo says:

yay! but if i had one i’d still run it on 98 too. i wasat the suzuki dealer and and asked what fuel the swift sports runs on. they said unleaded, i said 98? they said you can but you don’t have to

  11. booter says:

didnt they do a test on ‘today tonight’ with 3 cars lapping the sydney cbd and then a highway test, each car using a different fuel – 91,95,98. from memory 98 made the cars go further and when averaged out on the cost of fuel was about even with 91. 95 gave the worst ratio of distance/cost.

  12. snerd says:

Yep. With the Subaru, it would cost more to go the same distance on a tank with 91 than with 98.

  13. Shak says:

Guys i was just joking. Gotta make myself more announced next time.

  14. observer says:

BP is probably the only mainstream fuel supplier which still offers 95RON.

Shell/Caltex start with E10, then 91 then 98 Premium. (No 95 on offer) Mobils 300 plus outlets will be taken over by Caltex and rebranded.

So the initiative to drop from 98 to 95 is very limited by finding a BP service station. This situation will only get worse if the proposed NSW Govt legislation of mandatory E10 fuel replacing 91RON by 2011 eventuates.
