2016 Mazda CX-9 spied ahead of likely November debut
The new-generation 2016 Mazda CX-9, the final piece in Mazda’s rejuvenated ‘Kodo’-styled passenger line-up, has been spied testing again this week.
Although Mazda is expected to also reveal a production version of its recently revealed Koeru concept, this new CX-9 will bring an end to the older ‘Nagare’ styling that led the company’s previous generation of family cars.
As expected, the move to Mazda’s latest design language will give the Kluger-rivalling CX-9 a much sharper look, building on the styling that we’ve seen make its way across the wider Mazda range.
The new CX-9 will enter above the mid-sized CX-5, although the space between will soon be filled by the production version of the Koeru - which has already been spied testing - potentially with a CX-7 badge.
Little about the new CX-9 has been confirmed, although it is known that we can expect a seven-seat layout, and that a diesel engine is not likely to feature.
Speaking with CarAdvice in August, Mazda Australia chief Martin Benders confirmed a SkyActiv petrol-only plan.
The engine is expected to be a four-cylinder unit, and reports overseas suggest the CX-9’s launch will accompany the debut of a new turbocharged variant of the 2.5-litre mill that powers the CX-5, Mazda3 and Mazda6.
The new SUV is expected to debut at November’s Los Angeles motor show, which should point to an Australian launch occurring in the first half of 2016.
