Weekend deals on wheels

It’s time for the latest instalment of Deals on Wheels, which looks at four factory-backed special offers for all you weekend shoppers.

This isn’t a promotional campaign, just us trying to offer you some interesting suggestions if you’re in the market for some new wheels.

Volvo XC60 and V40

Small wonder Volvo sales are up double digits in 2015 — look at the deals it continues to offer. We’ve spoken about the Swedish brand’s sharpening knife before, but this new offer bears repeating.

For instance, there’s the MY16 XC60 family SUV in T5 petrol guise for $56,888 drive-away. Given the car’s list price at base level us $57,990 plus on-road costs, this is a sizeable saving. You’ll actually pay about $55K to get a Mazda CX-5 Akera on the road unless you haggle.

Standard features include a powered tailgate, in-built booster cushions, and front and rear parking sensors.

The deal extends to the new MY16 XC60 D4 diesel in all-wheel-drive (AWD) guise — a new variant. This versions gets autonomous brakes as well, and costs $58,888.

In addition, there's another Volvo deal. Sorry.

The 2016 V40 in new base 88kW 2.0-litre D2 diesel or 112kW 1.5-litre T3 petrol guises, both with a six-speed auto, can be had for $33,888 drive-away, with a reverse-view camera and autonomous brakes. That’s top-end Corolla ZR money.

Both the T3 and D2 appear to be new variants. We’ve asked Volvo Australia for more information.

The Holden range

Holden seems mighty keen to claw back sales from Mazda and Hyundai, both of which sit ahead of it year-to-date.

Not only is the company offering sharp drive-away deals, but it’s also offering free servicing until 2020. Here’s the thing - its cars (aside from the Commodore) are generally not class-leaders, or even close. But if you’re not a car person, there’s some serious temptation here.

Some examples. The Holden Colorado LS 4x4 dual-cab has a RRP of $45,490 plus on-roads. It’s currently $36,990 drive-away, and comes with free servicing out to 2020. All told, you’re saving at least $15,000.

Then there’s the Trax LS for $22,990 drive-away, which undercuts the $23,990 plus ORC RRP by a few grand. Then Holden throws in a free automatic gearbox if you want it and, you guessed it, services your car gratis for five years.

Same deal on Barina ($14,990 d/a), Malibu ($25,990) and runout Commodore SS Storm ($43,990) — all with free servicing. Actually the whole Holden range is covered.

Renault Clio RS

The entry Renault Clio RS with Sport Chassis normally retails for $29,490 plus on-roads, equating to a rough drive-away price (depending on state) of about $33,500.

Renault Australia is factory-backing a deal of $31,500 drive-away at the moment, but is also offering a zero per cent comparison rate on cars ordered before December 31. If you sign up to a (sizeable) balloon payment of $16,065 at the end of the 36-month loan, you’ll pay about $99 per week.

The RS Clio gets a 147kW turbo engine, 17-inch alloys, sat-nav, paddle-shifters for its dual-clutch auto and a five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty, roadside assistance and three capped-price services.
