New Proton Perdana sedan teased in Malaysia: Sleek styling on old Accord base

Malaysian carmaker Proton has handed down a series of shadowy teaser shots for its ‘new’ Perdana sedan, ahead of a domestic market launch set for early 2016.

The Perdana badge reaches back to the mid 1990s, although just two generations have been introduced in that time.

The first Perdana, built until 2009, was based on the seventh-generation Mitsubishi Galant, but its replacement saw Honda’s eight-generation Accord adopted as the donor car.

Cosmetically, that second-gen Perdana offered little more than a handful of minor tweaks, limited for the most part to a modified grille and a new front bumper.

The Perdana was used largely as a government fleet vehicle, with very few new examples finding their way into private ownership, or into export programs.

Plans to introduce the Perdana to Australia were understood to be on the cards in the late 1990s, but it never eventuated.

This new - or heavily overhauled - third-generation Perdana promises to be something of a rebirth for the badge, however, with a new dynamic look and a wider public launch in the Malaysian market.

Proton has confirmed in the Malaysian press that it will again utilise the eight-generation Accord, rather than the latest ninth-generation model, for its new Perdana.

But, as these teasers and preview photos reveal, the big sedan has been given a dramatic makeover.

Unlike the outgoing model, the 2016 Perdana will feature a new coupe-inspired profile, with new sheet metal at just about every corner.

Redesigned headlights and a new bumper can be seen at the front, while the profile appears to feature a more muscular look to the wheel arches and belt line.

Recent photos of Proton executives previewing the Perdana’s rear-end also hint at a more sporting look, with new tail lamps, an integrated boot-lip spoiler and a tall black bumper garnish with integrated exhaust finishers.

The new Perdana is set to launch in Malaysia from early 2016. For now, it is unclear if a wider launch overseas is planned.
