2016 Porsche 911 Carrera 4, Targa 4 pricing and specifications

New turbocharged Porsche 911 Carrera 4, 4S and Targa 4, 4S models details for Australia, on sale in second quarter 2016

Porsche has announced details of its all-wheel drive 2016 Carrera 4 and Targa 4 models this week, following the September debut of their rear-wheel drive siblings.

As with that earlier unveiling, today’s announcement brings more news of a turbocharged revolution, with engines in the 911 range now smaller but more powerful, and more efficient.

That means a new 3.0-litre capacity and a fixed-vane bi-turbo setup, with power and torque in ‘4’ models now up to 272kW and 450Nm, while 4S models deliver 309kW and 500Nm. That’s an increase of 15kW and 60Nm across the board.

The upgrade means that not only are the 2016 Carrera 4 and 4S models quicker than their predecessors, a switch to electro-hydraulically controlled all-wheel drive means that they’re also quicker than their rear-wheel drive counterparts for the first time.

Equipped with the PDK auto and Porsche’s Sport Chrono package, the Carrera 4 claims a 0-100km/h time of 4.1 seconds, while the 4S gets there in 3.8 seconds. That’s 0.4 and 0.3 seconds quicker than their predecessors, and 0.1 seconds faster than the equivalent rear-wheel drive models.

Depending on model and specification, top speeds for the new 4 and 4S models vary between 287 and 305km/h.

As with the rear-wheel drive models, the Sport Chrono pack of the 4 and 4S models now includes a mode-selection switch, derived from the hero 918 Spyder hypercar.

The rotary-design switch features four positions: Normal, Sport, Sport Plus and Individual.

With the PDK transmission, the switch adds a Sport Response button, pre-conditioning the engine with the optimum gear and adjusted engine management for a 20-second maximum acceleration.

Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) is equipped as standard, lowing ride height by 10mm. New shock absorbers are also featured, promising a wider spread of driving characteristics and improved body control during dynamic driving.

Active rear-axle steering is available as an option for the Carrera 4S, marking the adoption of chassis tech from the 911 Turbo (which may yet be renamed) and the 911 GT3. Apart from improving dynamics further, rear-axle steering also tightens the turning cycle by 0.4 metres.

Other features include a new 918-inspired 375mm steering wheel, with the option of a 360mm GT wheel, and the new Porsche Communications Management (PCM) infotainment system is also featured.

PCM offers voice control and phone-like multi-touch gesture functions via the 7.0-inch dash display.

A smartphone tray is now integrated into the centre armrest, offering charging and optimised phone reception.

Apple’s CarPlay connectivity platform is also available, but new WiFi-connected Google Earth and Google StreetView options offered in some markets won’t make their way to Australia until a new LTE phone module is made available in late 2017.

Likewise, the new Porsche Connect phone app – which offers remote control of certain vehicle functions, phone-to-vehicle transfer of navigation details, and access to PCM-integrated music streaming services – won’t come to Australian models until early in 2018.
