2016 Suzuki Ignis revealed ahead of Tokyo motor show, Australian potential unclear

Suzuki has released images of the all-new 2016 Suzuki Ignis ahead of its reveal at the 2015 Tokyo motor show, with the model expected to go on sale in 2016.

Based on the Suzuki iM-4 concept revealed at the 2015 Geneva motor show, the all-new Ignis debuts cool styling that follows the trend set by the newly launched Vitara.

The higher-riding Ignis looks similar to the concept car that debuted at Geneva, with only minor changes to styling around the body.

While Suzuki hasn't confirmed dimensions of the Ignis, or potential drivelines, the concept vehicle was 3693 millimetres long, 1709mm wide, and had a height of 1566mm, riding on a 2438mm long wheelbase. That made it 18mm longer and 109mm wider than the high-riding Jimny Sierra.

Despite the engine combinations not being confirmed, Suzuki recently launched a line of engines dubbed Boosterjet, with the 1.0-litre directly-injected turbocharged petrol Boosterjet engine likely to appear in the Ignis.

Perhaps we could even see the larger 1.4-litre Boosterjet used in a sportier version of the Ignis down the track.

The interior images show a new design trend for Suzuki with a Mercedes-Benz-esque floating screen atop the dashboard. The Ignis also follows the Vitara with insertable colour panels for the dashboard.

Suzuki Australia says that the Ignis is not currently confirmed for Australia, but the company is pushing for the model to be available.

Production for Europe begins in the second half of 2016, meaning that if it were green-lit for Australia, we could see the Ignis locally closer to the end of 2016 or early 2017.
