Unless Volkswagen simplify their models or offer a new line of simplified more sustainable models at an affordable price in comparison to the Corolla or Civic prices then they will not sell the most a to b cars for the masses. I think if they can use some typical German ingenuity and design cars which are also desirable, good to drive and with a similar level of reliability as Toyota then they will prevail.

Paul,
We really shouldn't compare a Corolla & Golf, but if you do, do it on Redbook and you will see just why the Golf costs more. Try to option the Corolla up to the specs of the Golf. You can't. So at $20,990 v $25,490 the Corolla is overpriced .. and you won't get a 12yr body warranty with a Corolla. That smacks of product confidence. I'm not knocking Corollas, but in this case I believe you get what you pay for ... a mediocre car for the mediocre mases. Take a new one of each for a test drive one day. I think you will be surprised and take note when you close the doors and listen for a clang or thud.

There are lots more VW models overseas and more will come downunder over time. In their home market, Germany, VW outsell BMW and Mercedes. I believe it's a case of perception and marketing, so for a quality product, VW must be on the right track seeings they can't get enough cars onto the showroom floors. It's a worldwide problem for them.

I can't wait for the Tiguan ... look out RAV4

^

Id want a GTi to be substantially better then something like say a Toyota Corolla, its $42k... its turboed... its meant to be sporty!

VW doesnt offer the same things as Toyota, they are more upmarket, their cheapest Golf is $27k which is in range topping Corolla territory. Meanwhile the cheapest Corolla is $22k and offers relatively similar features. Overall the point Im trying to make is that I dont think VW in Australia at least will ever dominante, their vehicles unlike Europe are more luxury here and cost a prity penny. Toyota on the other hand appeals to the masses with the Corolla which offers great value for money... and the masses are what gets you to be the number 1 manufacterer in the world.

no theyre not going to top toyota in the near future, but theyre easily the better brand.

my mates dad just bought a new golf gti and the car is amazingly good for a hot hatch. the direct shift box is phenominal and and refinement is brilliant.

only thing toyota has going for it is its reliability, which of late is starting to wane as they cut corners to become number 1. apart from that theyre ugly and they lack soul and heart.

i just hope VW dont cut corners and theyre build and reliability falls in the pursuit of increasing market share

Oh and also as the article says most were sold in Europe, Asia-Pacific is a larger market and is only getting larger (China etc).... so considering they service this market better I hardly think they are anywhere near 'topping' Toyota within the near future.

1. As for better Spec'd VWs, yes, they also cost more as well!

2. I dont know heaps about VW, but from what I do know their vehicle range isnt anywhere near as large and diverse as Toyota AND Lexus. I think they would be paying some attention to the VW developments, not sure if they would be worried just yet though

Topping Toyota?

Um what? I thought Toyota are number 1 in the world now, and VW still have a way to go, including having to beat GM.

^So true,
Veedub is very well spec'd
The Golf is available with seven engines (1.6, 1.9d, 2.0, 2.0d, 1.4ts, 2.0t, 3.2), the Corolla has one engine...

That's a pretty impressive result.

I don't know how close to Toyota they are, but when you compare the vehicles each offers, the VW is consistently better spec'd and classier.

EG Yaris vs Polo, Corolla vs Golf, then you have Jetta, Passat, sports variants; the vans make the Toyota vans look like death traps.

The other interesting thing (in Au at least) is that he VW product sells bucketloads of product at what could be argued to be very high prices in comparison to the "equivalent" competitor products.

And they sell heaps of diesels here, there are no Toyota diesel cars here.
