Alpina B4 BiTurbo on track for sale in Australia

Bespoke BMW tuner Alpina has confirmed that it's in talks with BMW Australia to import the BMW 4 Series based Alpina B4 BiTurbo locally in the near future.

Speaking from the Alpina stand at the Frankfurt Motor Show, assistant director of sales and marketing Daniela Schmid told CarAdvice that while there is no fixed date for a market entry in Australia, there is certainly a target to have their vehicles on Australian roads.

"We are currently having a look at the Australian market and we are very interested to come there and we are currently talking to BMW Australia about the possibilities to bring in such a car," said Schmid.

"There is no fixed date at the moment, but it is our target to enter the Australian market."

When quizzed about potential sales, Schmid suggested that while their goals would be entirely dependent on how the model is accepted in the Australian market, a figure of 50 vehicles per year would be achievable.

"It's difficult to say, we are a very exclusive and small manufacturer, producing 1700 cars per year, which was a record year last year, so it's always difficult to say exact numbers," she said.

"Depending on the development in general within the market, we are expecting around 50 cars annually depending on the product line up."

Based on the success of an initial 4 Series-based tester product, Alpina could then also look at increasing its presence in Australia with some of its other models, which include the 3 Series, X3, 5 Series and 6 Series in both diesel and petrol drivetrains.

"At the beginning we always try and start with one car to see the lifecycle of the car. Depending on the development, we then decide which models will be interesting for the market. That's the normal process."

A recent registration on a government website suggests that the Alpina B4 BiTurbo is the first model likely to enter the Australian market.

Producing 301kW of power and 600Nm of torque, the 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder petrol engine can sprint from 0-100km/h in just 4.2 seconds, with reasonable fuel use of 7.6L/100km. It's mated to an eight-speed ZF Sachs 8HP70 gearbox.
