Mazda’s revised CX-7 to appear at Frankfurt
August 13, 2009 by Matt Brogan
Mazda will reveal its revised CX-7 at next month’s Frankfurt International Motor Show.
Featuring Mazda’s new ‘family face’, as seen on Mazda6 and Mazda3, the new CX-7 offers a bolder stance and will this time be offered with a high-output diesel engine.
Under the bonnet Mazda’s efficient MZR-CD 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine will offer customers eco-friendly performance twinned with a sporty drive already familiar to the current model. New Mazda CX-7 complies with Euro Stage V emissions regulations, despite being a roomy SUV, achieving a significant reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
New Mazda CX-7 will provide a greater level of torque lower in the rev range, with maximum power also available lower down.
The Mazda CX-7 debuts as the first Japanese passenger car to have a diesel engine fitted with a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system, which cuts NOx emissions by 40 per cent. This technology will be offered exclusively to European customers in the new diesel version of the new Mazda CX-7 sports crossover SUV, when it goes on sale in October this year.
Thanks to the compact design of the SCR system, the Mazda CX-7 Diesel offers users the same 455 litres of luggage space (VDA) as the previous petrol engine version, and it is user-friendly. Refills of the AdBlue® liquid to the SCR system are required only during scheduled maintenance.
Joining the clean-running new Mazda CX-7 diesel in Frankfurt will be a host of other environmental technologies currently making Mazda’s European line-up greener than ever before – including Mazda’s fuel-saving i-stop system, and rotary hydrogen powertrain technology.

When it does arrive here, I do hope they bring the manual tranny petrol, and the manual diesel as well. The new smile doesn’t do much on an-already bold car, but I know it’ll go and drive well.
Hopefully they’ve fixed the lag problem…
I hope Mazda don’t mess 6 with this front. I just like new face of Mazda 3
Interesting. I think the gawking smile front looks stupid.
I hope they put this engine in the CX-9.
I need the extra seats and there really isn’t much to like in the market when you need 7 seats.
Speaking of which. Car Advice, how about a CX-9 review please? Perhaps a people mover comparison?
Cheers.
mazda say they are the happy car family well then why isn’t the mazda 2 smiling?
^^ hasnt got much to smile about…
This looks quite nice. And with the diesel it should go well and offer reasonable economy.
Just one question, will they offer the 2.5 petrol from the 6 and a 2WD version like they are in the U.S.?
Why not RDS? Because Mazda is regularly breaking previous sales records? Or because their cars are also winning awards by the handful? You tell me!
P.S: Show some pictures of the rear CarAdvice, is that too much too ask?
The 2 is smiling Yanzo. It is just a goofy grin.
“You look fine darling, but could you just smile?”
…
“Oh. And again but not quite so much.”
falcodore: Mazda Austrlia will be offering will be offering an entry level 2.5 petrol, turbo charged 2.3 and the 2.2 turbo diesel. All automatic except for diesel.
Expect a lot more features than the ones currently available. Also the new cx9 will be coming and with more trims to compete with more luxurious brands. Still the same v6 though but with slightly less fuel consumption.
Another great model for Mazda and the introduction of the turbo diesel and the choice of the two engines petrol engines will be a huge plus for the model range….
The new CX7 looks fresh and bold with the new family face…well done Mazda
@ZoomZoom; i’m assuming the entry level model will be 2WD as carrying around the exrta weight of the AWD system would negate any fuel economy benefits the 2.5 engine would deliver. Can you validate my assumption?
Like the new Kia “corporate face, this is just getting rediculous. I am a Mazda fan, but really?
I actually prefer this design to the current one. It looks more integrated, smoother, sleeker IMO. Looks good on this vehicle.
Whats the point of having turbo diesel, where only option is manual? Mazda need to come out with automatic transmission for the diesel.
Falcodore your assumption is correct. The 2.5 petrol model will be 2wd and come only in a 5 speed auto with fuel economy of 9.4l/100km
While the 2.2 turbo diesel producing 127kw/400nm will come in 6 speed manual only and consume 7.7l/100km
No automatic diesel come on! Maybe Mazda will consider it down the track.
This annoys me because I thought the pre face-lifted CX 7 looked just about perfect. It was well proportioned, the lines were right, the windows were right, the lights were right and the front was right. Now they’ve changed the front and it doesn’t look bad but it doesn’t look as good and just what is the point in getting a face-lift if you come out looking worse?
Glad to see buyers now have an option to that thirsty and lousy MZR engine. The lack of an auto with the diesel is a shortsight on Mazdas part! Lets hope the ride on the diesel is more complaint for a family hauler.
I really liked the CX7 until I drove one, handling and design aside the rough ride and engine was a let down on otherwise a great value package.
Mazda make nice cars but this smiley front is not attractive. Seems like the designers have been watching one too many Pixar movies.
That is a bit harsh Gilly. I wouldn’t call the MZR Disi engine lousy. It just doesn’t really work well in that application (small engine, big, heavy car). I am sure for example if Subaru put a WRX engine in a Tribeca you would have a similar outcome. Every manufacturer stuffs up now and then by putting the wrong engine in the wrong car. Commodore 4 cyl anyone??!!! Having driven both of the MPS cars, in the right application the engine is anything BUT lousy. Plus making into Ward’s Top Ten Engines in the World 3 years in a row must mean somthing…
Who what’s to drive an auto anyway…..so lame.
People say SsangYongs have awful styling. The Sport ute’s face is pretty compared to the monstrous grin on the Mazda. So they’re finally offering a diesel wonder if it comes only with manual gearbox (not mentioned in the story), as with the 6 wagon. When will manufacturers get it through their heads that the majority of car buyers in this country want autos?
No Turbo Diesel auto well im off to buy somthing else
How dumb are they we love our Turbo Auto;s
Mazda you just missed my sale
