I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for another car company to introduce DSG into $20k-$30k range cars - VW has the jump on them so if DSG is that important for you I would stick with the Golf. I agree with FordGT quality from Sth Africa is good (Mercedes C class and BMW 3 series all come from there - or used to anyway)

If DSG isn't a must have and you are price sensitive (

I sat in a Corolla and found it rather bland compared to the Ford Focus and Mazda 3 and uninspired driving but that’s my opinion, we currently own last years model Focus for about a year now and have not had any trouble, with 17000Kms on the clock, don’t be worried about where they are made because the quality is as good as that way overrated common Corolla, have a thorough test drive before racing off to Toyota.

I am wondering when the new 2008 Corolla comes out - I want to buy a Levin ZR but also want DSC. I was also looking at VW Golf/Ford Focus but don't want a car that's made in S.Africa.

So - Corolla or Mazda 3. Somehow the Mazda 3 looks boring inside and isn't that comfortable. The one I like is an SP23 but that's too gas guzzling for me...

My current car is a 2003 Echo (the cute one not the ugly one) and it's great so maybe I'll just go the Corolla this year. Should I wait for DSC? It's rumoured to be selling from this yer but all the dealers are playing dumb cos they want to sell all the old stock first...

Any advice boys?

:)

I have just bought a 2007 corolla and am waiting to pick it up in 2 weeks. i have been reading all your blogs and am a little confused. The marketing for the new corolla is targeting people like myself, im 22 and don't have that much disposable income but i can still afford to purchase one. I in the past have driven hyundai's (getz and accent) and the corolla is a large step above them. But in my thought process i test drove the focus mazda 3 golf and civic. The toyota was still best value for money. In the range, i still believe the WRX is miles infront of the competition. Only being 22 insurance was an issue for me, so corolla worked best.

Paul,
if people dont care about looks of the corolla then why are they offering some sporty enhancements?
it is the same as what they are doing with the XR4. how do you think it is good to sport up a corolla but pathetic to sport up a fiesta? they are both rice burners!!!!!

as for sales what im geting at is what hendrik said in the mazda3 being the highest in private sales. and then i related that back to what you always say that it is the private sales that mean something. and also note that its competitors are not sold every where in the world. a lot international sales would be in asian countries. they like to buy there own stuff there (and prob fair enough) and dont forget the places where focus sells it ranks high... for eg Europe its #1 in sales. oh see you skipped over the #1 safety rating for the focus too.
Quote...............
"The Commodore has only been number one because it sells 80% to fleets, Ive already gone over this…" so that means the rolla is not #1 now either cause of the higher private sales from mazda3

ok time to agree with you now. the fiesta is prob percieved as a chix/daughters car and the rolla as a grandmas car. now give me your daughter any day.

and paul what are you the rolla police? does toyota pay you to defend their products. the way you defend your toyotas weather it be the rice burning 4cyl's or the ever so ugly dont want to be seen in one people movers, to me proves you are a little bit one eyed. yes they may be a good product, but you need to lighten up and accept some aspects that might not be up to scratch in terms of toyota, and the reason you should accept the cons of toyota is because you are soooo quick to jump down on every other manufacturer particullarly when ford or holden is involved.

INFACT - the humble Corolla is the biggest selling vehicle in the world with an excess of 32 million to date. Wether Toyota tries to include the Auris to that figure will be interesting to note.

Andrew.M...

In relation to XR4:
There is a difference, the Corolla is a car that goes from A to Z, people DONT CARE about what it looks like, they just want a reliable car. At the end of the day, its just another car which blends in with the crowd and no-one really notices. The XR4 on the other hand is being marketed as some performance car and it looks like a chix car. Simple as that. And your also confused, I would say something like a Yaris is abit of a chix car... which I think is more comparable to the XR4 while the Corolla is comparable to the Focus... which I dont regard as a chix car, its in the same category as the Corolla in that its more neutral (and indeed one of my friends has a Focus). So no Im not FOS or completely biased, Im stating facts on this one, the Corolla is a decent car and hardly perceived as being a chix car... if anything its more seen to be an older drivers car.

In relation to sales:
Im not quite sure what you are talking about fleets etc? The Corolla sells the most overall, the most in private sales and is third in fleets. The Commodore has only been number one because it sells 80% to fleets, Ive already gone over this... prviate sales are a better indication of a quality vehicle as these people use THEIR OWN money and want THE BEST car available in terms of features, quality, reliability etc. Nevertheless the Corolla is an international car which has had and continues to have international success, you want to have a go at it for whatever reason (this applies to everyone)... then do so at your own embarressment.

-------------------

As for Focus talk as Dingo just highlighted, I believe from memory the Focus was number 1 or close to number 1 as the WORST car in terms of reliability within the first coupla of months of sale. Sure it looks good, but its quality is questionable... and I also think its interior plastics are abit cheap. On top of this, and backing up the reliability survey, my friends Focus has had issues when downshifting. So Im far from impressed about the Focus (Although it is the best looking for mine in that sector)

Hendrik - remember that leaked Australian Qaulity Survey only a couple of months ago - well the Corolla rated considerably higher the the Focus and VW for quality. Did we forget about that... haa !!

HA HA paul, did you read that last one?? i wasnt going to go there and be like you but it has been mentioned. "the high fleet sales on the corolla".
you have been knocking other brands especially the holden for their high fleet sales for a while. so by your own standards the corolla isnt the highest seller. hang on let me pull up one of YOUR quotes on the topic........................

"But once you only count privates sales (ie people who looked for THE best car for their own hard earned cash) the Corolla is first and the Commodore doesnt even list in the top 5!"

Hendrik,
yes i agree the focus and golf are prob a better car. well certainly on looks. maybe the base mod golf looks a little like the rest but the higher spec models do look quite alright. best looking pov pac mod is the focus.
ill be honest i can only judge the golf on looks and the reviews it is getting and by the sounds of that itsquite good in more than looks.
and i reckon if the focus has been here as long as the rolla well it would be the higher seller. you only need to look to europe where it is their highest seller.

Mazda 3 is i believe the highest selling privately bought car in Australia. Corolla sells most because of the huge number of fleet purchases now going for the 'Rolla.

Of course car sales figures are important, we all hope the local industry stays alive but in the end, i honestly don't give a sh*t about the new Corolla because it will never be as good as a Focus or Golf.

Paul,
now i can prove you are completely biased and or full of s**t.
i have read all of your postings on fords sporty version of the fiesta (xr4).
you repeatidly said all your mates thought it was a girls car and pretty much every one you knew thought the same thing. and now you say your mates would love this one? you love to say it so here it is..... WTF!!

your general over view of these cars in relation to the XR4 postings was it was pathetic to dress a car up to be sporty that wasnt a sports car and you also said no male would buy it

do you want me to copy some direct "QUOTES" for you???

i also would be careful what you say when you say "the corolla is the most popular for a reason" because we all know the holden commodore was the "most popular" for a long time and with that i bet you would be quick to point out there was no great reason why the commy was #1.

Only the hatch would have been sold as the Auris, the sedan would remain with the Corolla nameplate. Therefore effectively drawing current buyers back to the brand, aswell as new buyers.

alborz - If Toyota marketing thought the Auris name would be hit in Oz then most likely it would have utilised it. Considering Toyota has arguably the best marketing research regime in current times i would be more incline to follow thier findings.

The long standing reputation that the Corolla has established for itself is probably why it is still so successful in Oz. Besides, do you really want the Corolla to sell anymore units because that would only add greater strain on the other car companies trying to maintain viability in Australia. Admittedly, i do wonder how the Corolla would have sold as an Auris.

Yeah... i love bagging Holdens because they have manufactuered and imported some of Australia's most poorest quality cars. I most certainly wouldn't associate 'unique' with a Corolla either and nor would i with a dressed up Family hack of which the Maloo is nothing more of being.

Unique is a Aston Martin, Nissan GTR Godzilla, an AMG, phase3 351 GT-HO or even the upcoming IS-F or LF-A. Certainly not any Holden.

And that is MR Dingbat to you... !!

QUOTE = I think that works well for the current customers, but new and young customers do not want to tell their friends they just bought a new corooooollllaaa…

I dunno, this isnt 100% Toyota bias speaking but my friends have car shopped and mentioned Corollas as options and not cared. In the small car segment there aernt many cool cars anyway, can hardly brag when your car does the 100 in double figures, you just want something thats going to keep ticking over.

QUOTE = And Paul stop crapping on about how much Toyota sell blah blah blah.
Ill tell you whats a Unique car HSV E-Series Maloo… worth about a thousand corollas put together and guess what Paul they might not sell a million but who gives a toss because that car is UNIQUE

They are the most popular car, putting your fluff that its a crap design to rest. As for your Maloo HAHAHA your a joke, I am not a fan of any of these ute 'perfomance cars', anyone with half a brain when designing a car would think... ok Ive got 300kw and 55Nm of torque in a rear wheel drive car.... lets shove that in a ute... with weight distribution of 90:10 (exaggeration). No weight over drive wheels, enjoy seeing the traction control light flicker all the way up to 100km/h.

Dingbat i seriously think you like Holden deep down as you keep going on about them all the time? When you use the word "Unique" a Corolla is the last thing i would put under that category no matter how many bells and whistles you chuck on it. And Paul stop crapping on about how much Toyota sell blah blah blah.
