2016 Renault Megane revealed – UPDATE

The new Renault Megane, the fourth of its name, has been unveiled ahead of its full debut at the Frankfurt motor show later this week.

Based on the Renault-Nissan CMF (common module family) component matrix, the latest iteration of the Megane is said to share a lot with the much larger Talisman. The Talisman, like the related Espace people mover but unlike the Megane, is only being made in left-hand drive.

Franck Le Gall, the Megane's exterior design, says that C-shaped headlights not only provide a clear link between the Megane and the Talisman, but come from the fact that in a "highly competitive market of compact saloons, it was vital that New Megane should stand out right from the first glance".

Renault has yet to reveal full details about its new Golf-class competitor. We do know that it sits 25mm lower to the ground the third-generation model. It also has a track that's 47mm wider up front and 39mm broader at the rear.

The company says that its wheelbase has also grown 28mm, which by our calculations means that it measures 2669mm. Overhangs are claimed to be shorter than on the current model.

The blue vehicle pictured above is a new variant being introduced to the fourth-generation range, the GT. It features two chromed exhaust tips, more aggressive front and rear fascias, RenaultSport badging, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

It's not known at this stage how much extra power this model will feature will over more mainstream cars in the new Megane range.

Leaked images published earlier this week show the new Megane will feature an interior similar to the Talisman's, with top-of-the-range models featuring a large 8.7-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen display.

Since the original Megane was launched back in 1995, the car has become one of the mainstays of Renault's lineup, with over 6.5 million Megane-branded cars sold worldwide.

Update: The new Renault Megane has been confirmed for an Australian launch in the second half of 2016.
