2016 Kia Rondo range drops diesel, gets standard sat nav

The Kia Rondo range is now a petrol-only affair following the brand’s decision to drop the diesel engine from the local line-up.

The deletion of the two diesel-powered variants coincides with the introduction of the model year 2016 Kia Rondo range. The mid-tier SLi petrol has also been removed, cutting the number of variants available from five to just two.

Kia Australia corporate communications general manager Kevin Hepworth told us the deletion of the Rondo diesel was a result of those models' poor sales performance, revealing that it sold in “very, very small” numbers in our market.

Hepworth linked the unpopularity of the Rondo diesel with the fact that the engine wasn’t available in the flagship Platinum grade (the only one in the MY15 line-up with satellite navigation), as well as Australia’s general shift away from diesel-powered passenger cars.

The Rondo’s 1.7-litre four-cylinder diesel engine produced 100kW and 320Nm, and claimed combined cycle fuel consumption of 6.4 litres per 100 kilometres. Its exit leaves the 122kW/213Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine as the sole powertrain, using 7.9L/100km combined.

The only equipment change for the 2016 range is the addition of satellite navigation to the entry-grade Rondo Si. Its price rises $1250 to $31,490 plus on-road costs. The Rondo Platinum rises $250 to $39,990.
