BMW M5 Pure launched at $185k, most affordable M5 in decades

The price of entry into a BMW M5 super-sedan has been slashed by about $45,000 with the introduction of a new, ‘stripped’ Pure edition this week, making it the cheapest M5 since the E34 of the early 1990s.

Echoing the approach BMW took with the M3 Pure in mid-2013, near the end of that iteration’s life cycle, the M5 Pure loses some luxury items, but also becomes a whole lot more accessible.

Priced from $185,000 plus on-road costs, the M5 Pure compares to the regular M5 starting price of $229,930. This revision means it is now closer in pricing than the Audi S6 sedan ($169,900) than the RS6 Avant ($229,500). The Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG S costs $250,930.

BMW claims the M5 Pure edition “distils the iconic nameplate to its very essence”, music to the ears of fans of the E39, no doubt. Incidentally, the E39 was the last M5 to cost less than $200K, back at its launch in 1999.

That said, it loses out in one key area against other M5s. The M5 Pure gets the regular outputs of 412kW/680Nm from its 4.4-litre TwinPower Turbo V8 engine, rather than the 423kW outputs from the ‘normal’ M5, which comes standard with the Competition Package.

A such, the M5 Pure’s 0-100km/h time of 4.3 seconds is 0.1s slower than the other M5s. Retained is the rear-drive configuration and seven-speed M dual-clutch automatic transmission. The Active M differential also remains.

The M5 Pure also loses such items as the sun-blind, Bang and Olufsen stereo, and soft-close door functionality, though it’s far from a ‘stripper’ as the name might suggest. Standard features include:

Frozen matte paint, dynamic dampers, cruise control with auto braking, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, lane assist, a head-up display, reverse-view camera, all-round parking sensors and bird’s eye camera, 20-inch alloy wheels, Merino leather seats and the full suite of ConnectedDrive infotainment.

The introduction of the BMW M5 Pure comes shortly after the hardcore 441kW/700Nm Jahre Edition. BMW this week also launched two special edition M5 models called the Nighthawk and White Shadow, which you can read about here.

BMW M fans no doubt remember also that BMW cut about $16,000 from the price of its M3/M4 twins — a pre-emptive strike at its new Mercedes-AMG C63 nemesis.
