2016 Honda Civic sedan set for September debut – report
The all-new 2016 Honda Civic sedan, previewed as a muscly concept in April and revealed just weeks later through leaked patent images, is expected to make its official debut next month at two simultaneous events in the US.
According to industry journal Automotive News, Honda has confirmed a September 16 (17th for Australian viewers) unveiling for the sporty new sedan, which means that the new Civic’s debut will occur within hours of the Frankfurt motor show’s opening.
The report adds that Honda’s Civic events will occur side-by-side in Los Angeles and New York, but it remains to be seen if the new model will also appear in Frankfurt.
Honda has so far confirmed that its Frankfurt motor show stand will star the new Project 2&4 concept, along with existing models like the HR-V, Jazz, and the 2015 Civic range.
Full details on the new Civic sedan are still to come, but, as April’s leaked patent images reveal, we can expect more than a few of the powerfully styled concept’s design cues to appear on the new sedan.
That will include a broad wing-like design to the headlights and grille arrangement, along with large faux intakes at each corner of the front bumper.
Through the profile, the new Civic sedan will wear a fast rising belt-line, matched to a tapered, coupe-inspired roofline.
As part of a promise to revive its sporty image, Honda is expected to offer top-spec Civic models with a turbo-charged 150kW/260Nm 1.5 litre petrol engine, while variants at the entry end will likely keep a version of the existing 104kW/174Nm 1.8 litre engine.
A new Type R model is also promised, although not before the current model has finished in its run in the next couple of years.
An Australian debut for the new Civic sedan is expected to occur inside the next 12 months, with a new hatch model set to follow. Both will be made in Thailand for Australia.
