Mazda sales firm in soft market

By Matt Brogan |

Mazda Australia has increased its market share by an impressive 0.59 per cent YTD selling just over 6000 new vehicles in July.

According to VFACTS figures released yesterday, Mazda remains the country’s number one full-line vehicle importer with 44,627 new vehicles sold so far this year. That equates to an 8.4 per cent share in the Australian new car market.

Mazda’s market share for the month of July was equally as impressive at 8.0 per cent, a 0.25 percent month-on-month increase for the same time last year.

“After having a bumper record month in June it was pleasing to see Mazda maintain momentum in July with just over 6000 sales,” said Doug Dickson, Mazda Australia managing director.

“I am pleased to report that Mazda is well on track to achieving its 2009 sales forecast of 72,000.”

Big sellers for the brand include:

  • Mazda3 selling 2785 units for July, a 17.4 per cent segment share
  • Mazda6 selling more than 5000 units so far this year
  • RX-8 sales up 9.9 per cent year to date

Does anyone know how these figures are actually compiled? Sometimes I don’t think they are fully representative of the numbers you truly see on the road…

  • DesignEng©™

Paul, new car sales are compiled from actual vehicle registrations, not dealer deliveries or anything else that some would have you believe.
However, if a dealer registers a demonstrator, then it is counted as “sold”. But it is not re-counted when actually bought as a demonstrator.

BTW there are lots of demonstrator Cruze’s out there. My dealer contact has admitted to having over a dozen just in one yard alone.

  • Gav

I can’t be certain, but, I was under the impression that these statistics are compiled upon vehicles DELIVERED, not sold… In which case, the 5000 vehicles may make sense (i.e. Mazda finally fullfilling their back orders).

Can anyone confirm? Is the number on sold or delivered vehicles?

  • http://internode.on.net Pete

PaulS and Gav, this link at Bureau of Stats gives info:

    http://www.abs.gov.au/Ausstats/abs@.nsf/0/11F4B248E6DF86A7CA2575BC001D601D?OpenDocument

In part it states “The collection is known as VFACTS and is based on retail sales by all FCAI member companies.”

    Hope this helps.

  • S

The figures are based on vehicles registered.

Well done to Mazda. Arguably the best japanese manufacturer ATM.

Seriously considering the 3MPS, but will wait till i drive one.

  • PaulS

Ouch…. got 2 thumbs down for asking question… the rating system is obviously working – ha!

Thanks for the link Pete! And thanks others for clarification!

  • Neil

I no doubt assume those Mazda3 numbers were somewhat hampered by a lack of deliveries from Japan? They seem to be selling like hotcakes at the moment, and I doubt Mazda wouldnt be able to sell at least another 500 or so a month.

  • DesignEng©™

Paul, better two minutes of shame for asking a question that you don’t know, than be a moronic mushroom all your life like those that gave you the thumbs down!

  • JEKYL & HYDE

    DESIGN ENGINEER,

you may be right about cthe cruze’s,but you may be wrong.the word out there is there’s a wait list on cruze to nov09.if that is right, shouldn’t all those demo’s be sold?maybe the SMART dealers are demo’ing them simply to HAVE stock to show?either way you look at it,they are taking sales off SOMEBODY(4500 AND COUNTING)…

  • DesignEng©™

J&H, yep I heard they’ve got full order books, but still have lots of demonstrators, and stock out the back.

    Someone’s playing strategic games.

  • Andrew M

    J&H,
the waiting time is always half decent on an imported car.

If someone wants a combo not in stock, they will have to source it from O/S and throw it on a slow boat over here.

even if you need to get a factory ordered vehicle from an aussie manufacturer, its not unusual to wait 2 months.

As DesignEng said, they may have stock out the back, but somepeople doent want whats out the back

  • technofreak

    Go Mazda! :D
I’m doing my bit…3MPS on the way ;)

  • Falcodore

Thats true Andrew M, I bought a 323 “shades” back in ’98. Ordered it in March, it was built in April and delivered to me in May.

I wanted the metallic blue but they tried to sell me the white one on the lot, said they’ll but pin stripes on it. I said “Its still f#cken white! I’ll take the blue thanks. :)

P.S. The model was coming to the end of its cycle and they had no cars, in manual, in the colour i wanted in the country.

  • Falcodore

@ Technofreak, let us know about the car. I’m thinkin’ ’bout gettin’ 1.

Back in June 2009 when the new Mazda3 was first released, there were hoo-ha’s that the new Mazda3 was already a huge success selling 4000 or 5000 units. I told them it was because of the run out sales of the previous Mazda3 that made up most of the sales and that the new Mazda3 won’t sell as well because of the stupid fugly grin. The new Mazda3 would be lucky if it didn’t go the way of the AU Falcon or the Boulay’s fugly TL Magna, which killed it.

  • CJ

Well done Mazda. After owning various Jap (Subaru, Honda)and Aussie (Holden, Ford) cars I would say that the two Mazdas we own now (3 hatch and 6 wagon) are two of the best cars ever. Right price, right equipment and great service from dealer.

  • Devil’s Advocate

AAA, you would think what you are saying is true but in reality it couldn’t be any further from the truth. The release of the new 3 was actually brought forward from mid June to early April because they had pretty much already RUN OUT of the previous model. Even as early as Jan this year there were only limited numbers of certain models of the 3 available because they were not going to build any more. Mazda Australia asked head office to bring forward the release of the new model because they were running out and in some cases had already run out of stock. So it is actually the opposite to what you are saying. If they released it in June like originally planned they would have actually sold LESS, not more.

Hard to believe, but it is true!

Its a great result for Mazda.
If they had better dealers they would probably do even better. There can be no argument that Mazda make great cars (I’ve just bought my 4th) but they dealers are a$$holes. Their old fashioned sales tricks belong in the bad old days of shonky used car salesmen. I was amazed a dealer thought they could flat out lie to me and still think I would buy from them. Of the 4 dealers I went to in Brisabne, 2 lied to me, 1 was very deceptive and misleading. Luckily I went to Cleveland and found an honest salesman and a etical dealer and bought from them.
I’ve had my 6 nearly 3 months and I’m still waiting for Mazda to send me any info on their roadside assist or clarify whether I got the 3 or 4 year warranty

Another great result for Mazda but Hyundai is looming…

I ordered my Mazda 2 Genki + DSC in Dec 07 and took delivery Feb 08 and now this great little car will make room for a MPS3 in Feb 2010

Here is a breakdown of what Mazda models sold for July:

Mazda Model Breakdown (Model – Monthly Sales – YTD Sales)

    Mazda2 – 1,106 – 7,570
    Mazda3 – 2,732 – 20,901
    Mazda3 MPS – 53 – 80
    Mazda6 – 672 – 5,087
    Mazda6 MPS – 0 – 2
    MX-5 – 29 – 301
    RX-8 – 35 – 289
    CX-7 – 323 – 2,179
    CX-9 – 303 – 2,363
    BT-50 4X2 – 428 – 3,155
    BT-50 4X4 – 343 – 2,700

Mazdaman, sorry to hear about your troubles. I bought both of mine from a dealer in Mt Gravatt, one in March and one a month ago. I could not be happier with the service or the staff. Have already received info from Mazda about Roadside Assist and extended warranty for the second car. Maybe contact Mazda Australia direct to clarify your situation.

  • Jon Wiseley

I have to agree with MAZDAMAN- really like their cars but their salesman are dreadful. Recently purchased our new car only to be lied to by a very pushy salesman who then denied it to the sales manager. DP wasn’t much better. Enough to put me off ever buying a mazda again.
