2016 Audi R8 Spyder spy photos

The second-generation Audi R8 Spyder has been spotted at and around the Nurburgring by our team of spy photographers.

Despite the layer of swirly camouflage plastered all over its body, it's clear the new R8 Spyder isn't a radical departure from the coupe that it's based in.

The new convertible R8 will continue with a electronically operated soft top, which once again features flying buttress layout at the rear.

Under the skin, the new R8 Spyder is expected to utilise the same drivetrain setup as the second-generation R8 coupe. So, there should be a dry-sump dual-injection 5.2-litre V10, positioned behind the driver and passenger, which is connected to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

In the coupe, the V10 is offered in two states of tune: the regular V10 model with 396kW of power and 540Nm of torque at its disposal, and the V10 Plus that ups the game significantly with 449kW/560Nm on hand.

Equipped with the regular V10, the R8 coupe completes the 0-100km/h run in 3.5 seconds and is capable of a top speed of 320km/h. Fitted with the V10 Plus' motor, the second-generation coupe can brush off the 0-100km/h standard in 3.2 seconds and hit a top speed of 330km/h.

As all with convertible conversions, there will likely be a small performance impact.
