2016 Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series revealed, October launch confirmed for Australia

The refreshed 2016 Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series has made its world debut today, revealed ahead of an Australian sales debut set for late October.

Weeks of leaked images and spy photos have left few surprises for the big SUV’s tweaked styling, although today’s images offer a far clearer view of the changes.

Other upgrades include new safety equipment and revisions to the V8 petrol and diesel engines - the latter change bringing more power and Euro 5 compliance for the twin-turbo diesel, and improved fuel consumption figures for both.

Improvements to the 4.5-litre twin-turbo V8 diesel include new injectors, revised mapping and a new diesel particulate filter protected against off-roading damage by a special guard.

Toyota claims a 5kW power boost from the changes, now up to 200kW, while torque remains unchanged at 650Nm.

Fuel consumption and emissions are likewise improved, the former slipping from 10L/100km to 9.5L/100km, and the latter now conforming to Euro 5 emissions requirements - although an exact number is still to be confirmed.

The 4.6-litre V8 petrol engine gets a revised air-injection system focused on reduced emissions and Euro 5 compliance, while power and torque remain unchanged at 227kW and 439Nm. Fuel consumption figures are claimed to have improved from the outgoing V8 petrol engine’s 13.6L/100km, although a new number is still to be confirmed.

On the styling front, a bold new grille design headlines the LandCruiser’s design updates for the 2016 model year. Although earlier spy photos have shown the grille in a range of forms that vary across the trim grades, today’s unveiling shows only the top-shelf Sahara model.

In that specification, the grille’s chrome frame extends across the face of each headlight, while lower-specification models wear a slightly less audacious design. It remains to be seen, however, if this approach will feature in the Australian line-up. (Click through to the Photos tab above for more.)

Other changes include new dark-red LED tail lamps and a broader chrome garnish through the centre of the tailgate. There’s also new protective mouldings along the side, below revised door handles.

In the cabin, there’s new soft-touch and padded contact areas, along with a revised centre panel layout with new switches, a new storage space and a 12-volt outlet. In the Sahara, there’s also a wireless charger for compatible mobile phones.

A large nine-inch display - sizing up from the earlier eight-inch screen - will feature on VX and Sahara models, and both get a new Optitron instrument cluster with a 4.2-inch multi-function display.

Safety in the Sahara model is enhanced with the addition of Pre-Collision Safety System, Lane Departure Alert, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and Automatic High Beam.

The overall LandCruiser 200 Series will continue with diesel-only GX, and petrol or diesel options for the GXL, VX and Sahara models. All are equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission.

The GX model gets a grey fabric interior trim, while GXL offers the option of grey or beige fabric, and upgrading to VX or Sahara offers a choice of black or beige leather-accented trim.

The GX model seats five, diesel VX and Sahara will accommodate seven, and all other models boost capacity to eight occupants.

The range is now offered with 10 colours in total, with new options in 2016 including Copper Brown and Onyx Blue.

Pricing for the revised 2016 LandCruiser 200 Series range will be confirmed closer to its late October launch.

When it debuts, the refreshed LandCruiser will take on a repositioned Y62 Nissan Patrol, which recently had its price slashed by a huge $23,400 to a new opening price of $69,990 for the Ti model.

Today’s news comes as the latest update in a 4WD-heavy year at Toyota, with recent months bringing news of an upgraded Prado range, the all-new HiLux and Fortuner models, and, at luxury arm Lexus, the newly refreshed LX570.
