2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet previewed for September debut

Mercedes-Benz has handed down a first preview of its coming S-Class Cabriolet, the sixth body-style in its growing flagship range.

Due to be unveiled at next month’s Frankfurt motor show, the new droptop S-Class will join fellow two-door model the S-Class Coupe, along with the regular and long-wheelbase S-Class models, and the ultra-luxurious Mercedes-Maybach duo.

This will be the first-ever S-Class Cabriolet, but, importantly, it will also mark Merc’s return to the large flagship convertible arena - one it hasn’t played in since the early 1970s.

Mercedes is expected to point the S-Class Cabriolet in Bentley’s direction as a rival to the Continental GT Convertible, just as the Maybach models are pegged as Bentley and Rolls-Royce rivals.

Details on the new topless Mercedes are still to come, although we can expect powertrains and features to be carried over from the S-Class Coupe.

That should also mean top-shelf Mercedes-AMG S 63 and S 65 models, powered by the same 5.5-litre V8 and 6.2-litre V12 engines that feature in the Coupe and sedan models.

On the styling front, today’s teaser illustration reveals that, as expected, the S-Class Cabriolet will share much of its design with the Coupe, including slender tail lamps and a long, low-slung profile.

Watch for the S-Class Cabriolet to make its debut at next month’s Frankfurt motor show.
