2016 Audi Q5 spy photos

The next-generation Audi Q5 has been photographed by our team of spies on public roads in Grenada, Spain.

Despite every panel being covered in swirly camouflage, we can see how the new Q5's visuals will evolve. Trademark elements, such as the company's single frame grille and clamshell tailgate, used so far on all Audi SUVs, are carried through to the new model.

The new generation crossover will, however, feature flagpole-style wing mirrors, a crisper look up front, and and a prominent character line down the flanks.

Under the skin, the new Q5 will use parts from the Volkswagen Group's MLB component matrix, which is designed for longitudinal engine, front- and all-wheel drive vehicles. This should help ensure that the next-generation crossover will shed around 100 kilograms worth of weight.

The second-generation Q5 will likely share most of its drivetrain options with the recently unveiled fifth-generation Audi A4, meaning that forced induction will be used for most models.

Down the track, reports indicate that Audi will offer a plug-in hybrid Q5 e-tron with around 50 kilometres of pure electric driving range. There will also be a successor to the SQ5 and, possibly, also an even faster Q5 RS variant.

Depending on which sources you believe, the new Q5 will debut either in 2016 or 2017.
