Ferrari mule could be V6-powered Dino prototype

A Ferrari mule has been spotted by our spy photographers could be the first visual proof that the company is developing a more affordable sports car that captures the spirit of the long departed Dino.

According to our spy photography team, the 458-based mule didn't sound as though it was running with a naturally aspirated V8. It also didn't sound like the turbocharged V8 in the 488 GTB that scooted by just moments after.

In their estimation, the engine powering the prototype vehicle had tones not too dissimilar to the turbocharged V6 engine that will motivate the recently revealed Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio Verde.

The mule features reworked air intakes aft of the passenger doors. This car also ditches the centrally mounted exhaust found on the 458 in favour of two holes punched out through the rear diffuser, just below where the number plate sits.

In June this year, Ferrari and Fiat Chrysler boss Sergio Marchionne stated that a revival of the Dino "[is] a when not an if". The outspoken executive continued, "We know that [Dino] is an under-used resource, but that’s why we need to get it right".

The Alfa Romeo Giulia QV is powered by a Ferrari-developed turbocharged V6 engine. With around 375kW of power, the new M3 and C63-chasing sedan is said to be capable of completing the 0-100km/h dash in 3.9 seconds.

It's not known at this stage how closely related the Giulia QV's engine will be to any future V6-powered Ferrari or Dino.

Interestingly, the Ferrari mule seen here was spotted in Germany and also wears licence plates from the German city of Heilbronn.
