2016 Volvo XC90 pricing and specifications

The first all-new Volvo XC90 in 13 years has landed in local showrooms.

Prices for Volvo’s second-generation XC90 line-up are unchanged from the initial announcement in October 2014, ranging from $89,950 to $122,950 before on-road costs.

The local range comprises seven variants, offering Australian customers the choice of three powertrains (D5 diesel, T6 petrol and T8 plug-in hybrid petrol) and three trim levels (Momentum, Inscription and R-Design).

The pricing positions the base Volvo XC90 Momentum D5 within $1000 of the entry all-wheel-drive versions of the BMW X5 and Range Rover Sport, with the Swedish brand clearly pitching its new seven-seater up against the best luxury SUVs from Germany and England. The first-generation XC90 was available from as little as $69,590 late in its life.

In the country now are the D5 and T6 powertrains and the Momentum and Inscription trims. The T8 drivetrain and R-Design trim will arrive in the final quarter of the year.

Highlights of the Momentum trim level include a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster display and 9.0-inch central touchscreen, Sensus Navigation with voice control and a high-performance audio system, Wi-Fi connectivity, front and rear parking sensors and a reverse-view camera, LED auto bending lights with active high beam, 19-inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery, four-zone climate control, and City Safety with vehicle, pedestrian, cyclist and intersection mitigation and brake support.

An extra $7000 for the Inscription equipment line adds 20-inch alloys, keyless entry with hands-free tailgate opening, IntelliSafe Surround with blind-spot information system and cross-traffic alert and rear collision warning, Comfort Nappa leather upholstery, and a number of other trim enhancements.

An extra $1000 affords the R-Design, which gains 20-inch matt black diamond-cut R-Design alloys, R-Design perforated comfort Nappa leather upholstery, personal drive mode steering settings, paddleshifters, and exclusive R-Design trim highlights. The flagship T8 R-Design uniquely gets an Orrefors crystal gear lever, an electric panoramic sunroof and a tyre repair kit.

All 2016 Volvo XC90 variants feature a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission that drive all four wheels.

D5 variants get a 165kW/470Nm twin-turbocharged diesel engine that accelerates from 0-100km/h in a claimed 7.8 seconds and uses 6.2 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined cycle.

T6 models ($4000 more than the D5) get a turbocharged and supercharged 235kW/400Nm petrol engine, hit 100km/h from rest in 6.5 seconds and consume 8.5L/100km combined.

The T8 plug-in hybrid ($21,000 more than the T6 R-Design) takes the T6 engine and adds a 65kW/240Nm electric motor. The extra power and torque shaves almost a second off its sprint time (0-100km/h in 5.6sec) and lower fuel consumption to 2.1L/100km (measured to European standards).
