2016 Toyota Fortuner interior revealed

The interior of the 2016 Toyota Fortuner has been revealed ahead of its arrival in local showrooms at the end of October.

Official local images of the Fortuner’s cabin come a little over two weeks after Toyota Australia took the wraps off the exterior design of its new diesel-powered HiLux-based seven-seat SUV, which will support the petrol-only Kluger and challenge the likes of the forthcoming Ford Everest and Mitsubishi Challenger, as well as the Holden Colorado 7 and Isuzu MU-X.

The Australian images of the 2016 Toyota Fortuner’s interior appear largely identical to promotional shots of the cabin from the 4x4’s home market Thailand that appeared online late last month.

The shots confirm the Fortuner will share plenty of components with its HiLux donor car but will be clearly distinguished stylistically. Key differentiators include the two strong pillars either side of the centre stack, which, in the case of the top-spec variant, will be finished with luxurious stitched leather. The dashboard is also taller and more muscular than the HiLux’s more car-like layout.

The steering wheel, instrument cluster, central touchscreen display and climate control functions all appear to be lifted from the new-generation ute, which will go on sale locally alongside the Fortuner in October.

Toyota says every Fortuner variant (GX, GXL and Crusade) will come standard with a 7.0-inch touchscreen display with the Toyota Link connectivity system, as well as air conditioning vents for all three seating rows, and one-touch slide-and-tumble second-row seats. The third-row seats can be flipped up and stowed against the walls of the boot when not in use.

Standard safety equipment comprises a reverse-view camera, stability control, and seven airbags, including curtain airbags that protect all three rows of seats, while other convenience features include a central compartment with heating and cooling functions, three 12-volt accessory sockets, a full-size spare wheel and automatic headlights.

Over the entry Fortuner GX, the mid-tier GXL gains keyless entry and push-button start, a premium steering wheel (with paddleshifters for automatic variants) and gear level, privacy glass and a colour instrument cluster screen.

The Crusade exclusively scores leather-accented upholstery, satellite navigation, DAB+ digital radio, climate control, eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, power tailgate, 220-volt power point, woodgrain trim, and a soft-touch console box lid.

Pricing will be revealed closer to its October launch, though as the entry point to Toyota’s large diesel SUV range and a complement for the more on-road-biased Kluger, pricing is likely to align closely with it between $40,000 and $70,000 before on-road costs.
