2016 Subaru WRX, WRX STI pricing and specifications

The 2016 Subaru WRX and WRX STI sedans launch this week, bringing to the table more equipment and some small pricing tweaks in both directions.

Starting at the bottom, the entry Subaru WRX versions — unchanged in price at $38,990 (manual) and $40,990 (CVT) plus on-road costs — get a new 6.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system that looks a big step up from what was on offer before, and new 18-inch wheels.

Meantime, the WRX Premium (up $900 to $44,890 as a manual and $46,890 as a CVT) gets a swag of new features such as blind-spot monitoring, lane change assist, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, high-beam assist, a side-view monitor built into the passenger wing mirrors, rear cross-traffic alert, and power-folding side mirrors.

The WRX Premium also gets a 7.0-inch system, introducing a wide array of new functions, including pinch/zoom, voice recognition and Pandora compatibility.

Atop the range, the WRX STI gets a price cut of $500 to $49,490, while the STI with rear spoiler gets a $200 cut to $49,790. The STI Premium climbs by $400 and $700 respectively to $55,390 (without spoiler) and $55,690 (with spoiler).

“WRX is already regarded as well specced, but these latest additions make it the best ever in terms of the performance, value and features equation,” said Subaru Australia managing director, Nick Senior.

“WRX and WRX STI are already selling at levels unseen since the late 1990s and the latest list of new technologies can only boost their turbocharged sales success even further.”

He’s not wrong: the WRX is selling up a storm in 2015, with 1665 units registered, up 14.3 per cent. It’s overtaken the Toyota 86 (1619), which is the reigning top-selling sports car.

The range adjustment follows on from other very recent Subaru Australia activity such as the huge price cuts (and subsequent sales booms) on the new Outback and Liberty, the updated XV and Impreza models and the re-jigged Forester range.
