Bugatti Veyron successor will have hybrid variant according to Volkswagen CEO
Martin Winterkorn, CEO of the Volkswagen Group, has confirmed that there will be a follow up to the Bugatti Veyron and that it will be offered with a hybrid drivetrain.
Regarding the Veyron's successor, Winterkorn told Bild am Sonntag that "there will be, for the first time, next to the petrol model, a hybrid version with improved performance".
This comment confirms at least the gist of reports from last year, which claimed that the replacement for the Veyron will have a hybrid drivetrain.
Autocar believes that the Veyron successor will be revealed in 2016, with the first customer vehicles to be delivered in 2017.
Sources who spoke to Reuters in 2014 said that the new car will feature a 1103kW (1500bhp) version of the Veyron's W16 engine. A later report in Autocar said that the updated motor will feature direct injection instead of multi-point injection, as well as new electric turbos.
Prototypes of such a vehicle have reportedly been built. Top speed is projected to be in excess of 460km/h, while a 0-100km/h time of around 2.3 seconds is said to be on the cards.
The Veyron Super Sport World Record Edition, by comparison, is capable of completing the 0-100km/h run in 2.5 seconds and hitting a top speed of 431km/h.
Earlier this year, the French supercar maker revealed the last ever production version of the Veyron, dubbed La Finale (above).
Clad in a unique red and black paint scheme, the finale Veyron coupe is powered by 8.0-litre W16 engine with 883kW of power and 1500Nm of torque to its name. Drive is sent to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
