Performax International recalls: Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Ford Mustang models with Takata airbags affected

Queensland-based importer and right-hand drive conversion house, Performax International, has announced that a number of vehicles it sold between 1 December 2006 and 31 December 2008 are affected by the wide-ranging international recall over Takata airbags.

They include the 2007-2008 model Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty pick-up, the 2007-2008 GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty pick-up, and the 2007-2008 Ford Mustang and Ford GT Mustang.

The story for this recall is a similar one to that which we've seen apply to millions of vehicles around the world. From the official recall notice on the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission's site: "Driver airbag inflator housing may rupture due to excessive internal pressure during normal airbag deployment events".

The hazard is that the "inflator rupture during airbag deployment events could result in metal fragments striking and potentially seriously injuring the vehicle occupants".

A VIN list attached to the recall documentation indicates that 127 vehicles are affected, adding to the tally of about 700,000 cars, utes and SUVs currently recalled over the issue.

Owners will receive a letter from Performax International "when replacement parts are available", but those who wish to find out more information can call 07 5482 7833 or email gm@performax.com.au.

The Takata airbag recall has become the largest automotive recall in history, affecting more than 53 million vehicles and more than a dozen car makers around the world.

Among those are more than 700,000 vehicles in Australia, with brands such as Honda, Nissan and Toyota affected, as well as BMW, ChryslerLexusMazda and Mercedes-Benz.
