Subaru Rebadged As Toyota

July 3, 2007 by Alborz Fallah

For all those that claimed the new Impreza looked remarkably like a Toyota Camry, there may have been more to the story than we thought. It seems Subaru and Toyota are becoming new best friends, much to the despise of many Subaru enthusiasts.

Reports from Japan indicate that Subaru are now rebadging their SUV, the Tribeca (the facelifted version arriving soon is pictures below), as a Scion, a Toyota owned U.S. car brand targeting generation Y.

Toyota currently owns 8.6% of Fuji Heavy Industries, the owner of Subaru. Given the recent change in Japanese anti-trust laws in favour of take overs, it is more than possible that Toyota will dig deeper for more ownership.

Given the mundane look of the new Subaru Impreza, is this the beginning of a generation of uninspiring Subarus? Will the Impreza turn into the new Toyota Camry?

I’m more worried about the next Liberty becoming a Camry, I use to like Subaru for being unique, frameless windows, AWD, high sporting intentions. They have already phrased out the frameless windows on the Camreza and the Tribeca, soon Subaru will have FWD and be for mass market only.

Don’t worry, mum and dad will still buy one, as long as the price is competitive. Everything else doesn’t matter to their mass market sector.

Reminds me of Nissan Ute, Ford Mavaric, Holden Nova, Toyota Lexin and all the rest.
