I think the French car reliability issue is a historical anomaly. I agree that some of the poor build quality in the 80’s and 90’s severely damaged their reputation, but things are now much better thanks to the PSA arrangement.

The new PSA diesel motors and gearboxes are fairly robust, and the component sharing allows the manufacturers to focus a little more on other aspects, such as build quality.

OMG ….we’ve had 8 comments so far, and no one has used the word “quirky”!!! …. a true rarity in Australian motoring journalism ;)

Well, Steve, first, Autralia has a comparatively mild climate and easy driving conditions. Anyone who has travelled a bit around the world will confirm that. Second, which bits fall off Renaults. How can anyone take your jibe for anything other than that? What is your vested interest?

I still hate the fact that these cars (all French boxes) are equivalents to the cheap and nasty stuff you find here in Australia. Yet they arrive here and because they’re from Europe, attract a high ticket price.

I love French cars, there’s a 405 Mi16 in my stable. Maybe a 205 GTI soon too, for the wife ;) But I hate how they fall to bits in our hot sunburnt country.

Interesting as i read an article today where the french have gone off cars completley and plasma t.v.s have sky rocketed? Looks like the french are staying indoors on the car market now LOL

Given that Renaults seem to blend into the traffic, I think keeping the disguise on this test mule is a clever attempt to attract attention to Renault. And it worked! Would this photographer have taken these photos if the disguise was not in place?
