Mercedes-Benz GLC spied virtually undisguised ahead of launch

Just days before its official unveiling, the Mercedes-Benz GLC has been caught practically undisguised on the streets of Germany.

While Mercedes-Benz has had a C-Class-derived SUV on sale across much of the world since 2008, the company has been notably absent from the growing market segment in Australia and other right-hand drive markets, as the boxy GLK was only engineered to accommodate a tiller on the left.

Thanks to the company's new, more standardised naming convention, the GLK's successor will be known as the GLC, and will slot in between the GLA, which uses a front-wheel drive architecture, and the larger, and recently facelifted, GLE that replaced the M-Class.

The new GLC will be built in both left- and right-hand drive.

Unlike earlier spy photos of the GLC, which featured prototypes wearing some rudimentary camouflage to disguise the crossover's side character lines, this vehicle only has a light splash of tape to hide elements of the front air intake and lower bumper, headlights, tail-lights and a slither of the rear bumper.

The prototype seen here features chrome mouldings not only on the edges of the side windows, but also, prominently, on the bottom section of the front and rear fascias.

It's expected that the GLC will have an engine lineup that largely mirrors that of the C-Class. Many models are likely to be offered in both rear- and all-wheel drive configurations.

The GLC has been confirmed in Australia, although on-sale dates have yet to be announced. The GLC will be unveiled on June 17, European time.
